SUMMARY:The Serving Library: The Serving Library: Liverpool Biennial 2018:
 Forensic Aesthetics – Eyal Weizman
DESCRIPTION:Forensic Aesthetics – Eyal Weizman\n\nA talk by Eyal Weizman
  (Founder\, Forensic Architecture\, Goldsmiths College\, London) curate
d by The Serving Library in partnership with LJMU’s Exhibition Researc
h Lab for Liverpool Biennial 2018\n\n\nForensic Architecture is both the n
ame of an agency established in 2010\, and a form of investigative practic
e into state violence and human rights violations that traverses architect
ural\, journalistic and legal fields. In this talk\, founder Eyal Weizman
will unpack the term ‘forensic aesthetics’\, one of several key concep
ts that underlie the group’s approach. Typically associated with manipul
ation\, emotional or illusionary trickery\, and subjective sentiment\, the
notion of ‘aesthetics’ seems at odds with the definition of truth as
something that is objectively given. Yet\, aesthetic considerations traver
se all dimensions of forensic operation. Forensics is an ‘aesthetic’ p
ractice because it involves the modes and means by which incidents are sen
sed and evidence is presented.\n\nEyal Weizman (b. 1970) is an Israeli int
ellectual and architect. He is Professor of Spatial and Visual Cultures at
Goldsmiths\, London\, and Director of the Centre for Research Architectur
e – a 'laboratory for critical spatial practices' that he created within
the Department of Visual Cultures. In 2011 he established the agency Fore
nsic Architecture\, an interdisciplinary team of investigators that provid
es advanced architectural and media evidence to civil society groups such
as truth commissions\, courts and human rights reports. Forensic Architect
ure is nominated for the Turner Prize in 2018.\n\nJoin us from 6pm for dri
nks and conversation ahead of a prompt 6.30pm start.\n\nThis event is part
of the public programme for Liverpool Biennial 2018\, which includes a s
eries of talks by leading thinkers and artists in response to the question
  Beautiful world\, where are you?
