SUMMARY:The Royal Standard: The Royal Standard: Youcef Hadjazi - Trauma The
 n\, Trauma Now

 ay - Sunday\nOpening Event: Friday 22nd October\, 5-7pm\nPerformance works
 hop: 1-4pm\, Saturday 23 October\nYoucef Hadjazi’s project Trauma Then\
, Trauma Now explores collective and transgenerational trauma in post-col
onial nations by focusing on the Algerian Civil War\, often known as ‘Th
e Black Decade’.\nThis exhibition\, part of Liverpool Arab Arts Festival
2021 and hosted by The Royal Standard is the first gallery presentation
of the project. Youcef is inviting participants to contribute to the deve
lopment of the work in a live performance workshop on Saturday 23 October.
\nThe Algerian Civil War was preceded by a number of internal conflicts in
  the late 1980’s and early 90’s. Gradually\, a large\, barbaric extrem
ist group was formed\, which terrorised the nation for a decade. Throughou
t the conflict\, groups would build shelters and bases in rural parts of t
he country\, which were often destroyed by the Algerian government by burn
ing forests\, leading to huge levels of deforestation and damage.\nHadjazi
’s filmed performance\, in collaboration with dramaturg illyr\, embodie
s emotional and physical interpretations of the trauma provoked by the Civ
il War. Each individual movement revisits a place in time of conflict and
colonial damage\, inspired by the psychoanalytic practice of EMDR - a tech
nique often used for patients suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorde
 r. This technique can allow for the brain to be distracted from the body\,
meaning memories are able to be reprocessed.\nThrough this in-depth resea
rch of the war and its impacts on the Algerian population\, Hadjazi aims t
o deconstruct and highlight the ways that a legacy of colonial trauma can
 transcend generations.\nMovement &amp\; dramaturgy: illyr\nBiography:\nYou
