SUMMARY:The Royal Standard: The Royal Standard: Do They Owe Us A Living?
DESCRIPTION:\nDo They Owe Us A Living?\n\n\n Wednesday\, August 17\, 20226
 :00 PM \nSaturday\, September 24\, 20225:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganised
in collaboration with the Art of Management &amp\; Organisation conferenc
e\, co-hosted by the Bluecoat and the University of Liverpool\, the group
exhibition Do They Owe Us A Living? brings together twelve artists and art
ist collaborations and takes as its point of departure the conference them
e ‘art-as-activism’. Each artist was asked to respond to the theme of
activism within the broader context of the conference.\nThe exhibition fe
atures a diverse range of practice: from community-focused projects engagi
ng with care in the workplace and council-approved regeneration programmes
\; through to artworks directed at the histories of prejudice surrounding
different communities\; as well as work that questions the efficacy of art
to function as an act of political resistance in its vulnerability to pol
itical co-option\; ‘activism’ proposed less as a given than a complex
proposition.\nWhile the Achilles’ heel of activism lies with its suscept
ibility to sanitisation under capitalism\, and the Achilles’ heel of ‘
art-as-activism’\, the squaring of aesthetic questions with moral ones\,
what unites these artists is the way in which they seek to critique life
under the market forces of neoliberalism\, shedding light on the grassroo
ts of lived experience\, in the workplace and beyond\, whilst throwing ca
ution to the ‘activist’ tag.\nInspired by the 1978 song by the punk ba
nd Crass\, from which it takes its name\, Do They Owe Us A  Living? sets
out to reveal\, as an exhibition and idea\, how any “living“ owed is r
egistered solely with quality of life\, as distinct from the ubiquitous cu
lture of cost-benefit analysis and transactional thinking that surrounds u
 s.\nArtists: Beagles &amp\; Ramsay\, Terry Bond\, Dreamchord (nil00 &amp\;
Yank Scally)\, Pil &amp\; Galia Kollectiv\, Rachel  Garfield\, Julika Gi
 ttner\, Al Hopwood\, Sumuyya Khader\, Manual Labours (Sophie Hope &amp\; J
 enny  Richards)\, Chad McCail\, Ian Monroe\, Simon Willems.\nCurated by S
imon Willems\, artist and British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Unive
 rsity of  Reading.\nPrivate View: 17th August 6-8pm\nOpen: Thursday\, Fri
 day\, Saturday 12-5 pm from 18th August - 24th September.\nTalks:\nSaturda
 y 20th August - 11am\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
