DESCRIPTION:Suitable for complete beginners who are new to textile arts as 
 well as those looking to experiment with more advanced projects.\n\nBOOK H

 --------------------------------------------------\n\nProgramme\n\nThis is
  a creative and experimental course in which students will produce a range
  of samples and some finished items. The course is aimed at a complete beg
 inner however would be suited to somebody with some experience looking to 
 brush up on skills in a friendly group environment. Catherine provides ple
 nty of inspiration\, physical examples along with web references and books
  to encourage students to broaden their textile knowledge. Suitable for ag
 es 15 upwards.\n\nStudents will be provided with materials for the course 
 (which will be sanitised) alternatively\, students can bring their own equ
 ipment if they’d prefer. A full list of what’s needed for each week wi
 ll be provided in advance. There will be materials and equipment in the cl
 ass to purchase. The room has a sink for clean up of equipment.\n\nALL stu
 dents should bring their own basic kit of pen\, pencil\, notebook\, scrap 
 paper\, fabric scissors\, embroidery (very small) scissors\, stitching nee
 dle with thread.\n\nThe class is mostly taught by ‘demonstration’ meth
 od with each week Catherine giving an introduction to the technique\, hist
 orical references\, examples from Catherine and past students – with ref
 erences for suppliers and further reading.\n\nWeek 1\n\nPaper piecing - qu
 ilting for memory. Materials\, equipment\, vintage fabrics and templates p
 rovided. As the 1st week\, here a gentle and fairly easy class to get star
 ted! Choose from a selection of colourful fabrics or bring your own. Often
  old clothes have memory even though they don’t fit us any more! – her
 e you can chop up and reinvent.\n\nWeek 2\n\nHand painted textiles in the 
 theme of Floral &amp\; Botanical – using reactive dye\, fabric paint\, s
 tencils\, print\, bleach painting. All equipment &amp\; materials provided
  however if students have any plain white fabrics\, tea towels\, canvas ba
 gs\, fabric paints etc at home they can bring these in to work with.\n\nWe
 ek 3\n\nWet felting – Pop art or Landscape – natural merino wool fibre
 s are provided along with mohair yarns and plant fibres for students to ex
 periment with. An A4 size felted flat textile piece will be produced.\n\nW
 eek 4 &amp\; 5\n\nBatik and shibori – the group splits into 2 halves and
  switches activity over these 2 weeks. Batik is the use of metal tools (Tj
 anting )and hot wax to layer up washes of dye/fabric paint onto cotton fab
 ric. Students will complete an A4/A3 size textile piece. Shibori is a Japa
 nese manual resist technique using stitch\, elastic bands and other method
 s to produce beautiful indigo dye patterns. Students will follow Catherine
  to learn several techniques and can produce their own project.\n\nWeek 6\
 n\n3D felting – using natural British wools and a balloon to produce a s
 mall bird nest. Similar to papier-mâché but with natural fibres.\n\nWeek
  7\n\nLino print fabric – theme Natures’ Design. Working with a small 
 carving tool to cut away a simple design into lino\, then printing onto ei
 ther fabric or paper.\n\nWeek 8\n\nNeedle felting – Students can choose 
 to make a mouse or a robin along with some small items like mushrooms and 
 shells. Catherine will provide all materials and share techniques for cons
 truction\, blending colours and shaping in this magical sculptural art.\n\
 nWeek 9\n\nNuno felting – translating as ‘cloth’ in Japanese\, this 
 technique builds on the previous 2 weeks felt sessions. Here students will
  manipulate woven fabric with natural fibres to produce a flower\, small n
 eck scarf or journal cover.\n\nWeek 10\n\nIn this final week Catherine wil
 l show some hand stitch techniques and appliqué. Students can choose to w
 ork into fabrics produced in previous weeks such as printed\, dyed and fel
 ted. Often any samples which students consider less successful can be cut 
 up in a collage style and reinvented here.\n\nTutor: Catherine Carmyllie i
 s a Liverpool based artist currently working across painting and textile a
 rt. She completed a Textile Art degree at Huddersfield University before s
 pending 6 months at The Arts and Crafts Academy of Kuopio\, Finland where 
 she had the opportunity to learn ancient Scandinavian skills such as bookb
 inding\, weaving\, feltmaking amongst others. Catherine regularly teaches
