SUMMARY:Baltic Creative: The Pod: LAAF: And still\, it remains – special
 screening
DESCRIPTION:And still\, it remains – special screening\nMonday 10 July\,
 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm\nThe Pod\, 41 Jordan Street\, Liverpool\, L1 0BW. Locat
ed Baltic Creative main hub. Entrance on Jordan Street.\n\nFree.\nA day of
special screenings for Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah’s new commission An
d still\, it remains.\nTo launch Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah’s newly
commissioned film And still\, it remains\, join Arwa and artist Leila
Gamaz for this special evening of artist film screenings and discussion o
n key themes such as climate justice\, moderated by poet\, Amina Atiq. \
nBetween 1960 and 1966\, France tested and detonated a series of nuclear b
ombs in the Algerian desert. These explosions poisoned the land with radio
active material\, inflicting devastating – and permanent – ecological
and humanitarian harm.\n\nIn 2021\, radioactive sand from the Sahara was b
lown from the Algerian desert back to France by sweeping winds. This meteo
rological event served as a reminder that the environmental legacies of co
lonialism cannot be forgotten or contained.\n\nFilmed in a village in the
Algerian Sahara\, the work features interviews with residents who are surr
ounded by ancient rock art and the legacies of these tests. Exploring thei
r own migration to the area\, and the impacts of the nuclear tests\, Abura
wa and Shah’s film asks how people live with the afterlife of toxic colo
nialism?\n\nArtist Leila Gamaz shares stories that create opportunities fo
r healing losses experienced by the diaspora. This encompasses memories of
and held by landscapes\, species\, and bodies. Leila will screening a rec
ent film work\, followed by a moderated discussion by Amina Atiqthat will
draw out shared themes between both films\, including climate justice and
colonialism.\n\nAnd still\, it remains is commissioned by Liverpool Arab
Arts Festival.\n\nSupported using funds from Arts Council England.\n\nWit
h thanks to LUX.\n\nSuitable for ages +16.\n\nAccess: This venue is access
ible. Please email admin@arabicartsfestival.co.uk for any access request
