SUMMARY:The Lake Gallery: The LAKE Gallery: Beneath the Surface
DESCRIPTION:Beneath the Surface\nIntuitive responses to the landscape\nNina
  Archer\nClare Maria Wood\n\nThursday 7 th March – Saturday 6 th April\n
 \nOpening Times: Thursday – Saturday\, 10am – 4pm\n\nThe LAKE gallery
is proud to present ‘Beneath the Surface’\, a collection of new painti
ngs from the studios of Nina Archer and Clare Maria Wood. Both artists hav
e a strong association with landscape\; Nina with the hills around her sou
th Shropshire home and Clare with the moors and coastal edges of her nativ
e north Yorkshire. Working intuitively\, layers and textures are gradually
built up to create striking abstract pieces which offer a look beyond wha
t is normally seen.\n\nNina Archer is an abstract painter\, living and wor
king in the borderlands of the Welsh Marches. Her work is very much about
her experience of living and working in a diverse landscape combining Wels
h and English cultural influences with a distinctive geography of ridgeway
 s\, forested valleys\, mountains and rivers.\n\n“I spend a lot of time w
alking and observing elements of the landscape that have become important
to me. When I am back in the studio I develop these observations through a
bstracted forms often defined by the dramatic light\, black shapes\, the d
arkness and contrast of the forested valleys\, accents of colour and the t
extural feel of this unique landscape.”\n\nClare Maria Wood was brought
up by the coast in North Yorkshire. She studied Fine Art Painting at Wimbl
edon School of Art and Goldsmiths University in the 90s\, and\, more recen
tly\, Printmaking at the Curwen Print Centre with Stanley Jones and Chloe
Cheese. “The worlds above and below the ocean&amp\;#39\;s surface have b
een my most recent inspiration\, which serve as a metaphor for human inter
actions about love\, loss\, and hope. I walk each day with my dog\, in all
weathers. To be at the edge of the elements\, where light shifts and danc
es\; reliant and yet independent of the darkness\, is exciting. This immer
sive ritual of walking through familiar terrain allows me time to reflect
whilst acquiring sensory information on the way. “\n\nThe gallery will b
e hosting a preview evening on Thursday 7 th March between 6pm and 8pm\, a
nd all are welcome.\n\nYou’ll find the LAKE gallery in the heart of West
Kirby\, a couple of minutes walk from the\ntrain station.\n\nThe LAKE gal
