SUMMARY:The Atkinson: The Atkinson: The Liverpool School
DESCRIPTION:Atkinson hosts Liverpool School’s third major show\n\nThe Liv
erpool School of artists is staging its third major exhibition at the Atki
nson gallery in Southport to coincide with the Liverpool Biennial.\n\nThe
exhibition\, which opens on Saturday\, September 1 until Saturday\, Octobe
r 29\, is the largest show yet put on by the group which now has 12 member
s from Liverpool\, the Wirral and the Midlands\n\nThe Liverpool School’s
basic aim is to redefine urban art in geometric painting\, both 2D and 3D
\, using city life and buildings and transportation as its inspiration –
anything which depicts and portrays the rhythms of urban life. As an aest
hetic\, the urban landscape may be regarded as the vision a society projec
ts about itself into the future.\n\nEach of the Liverpool School members i
nterprets the city landscape in their own way and in their own distinctive
styles. The movement is not a straightjacket restricting how the world sh
ould be viewed\, but rather it points in a new general direction for urban
art to take.\n\nThe work on show varies from the abstract\, geometric wor
k of Mike Rickett\, Gabrielle Caul and Cherie Grist to the more convention
al but still urban\, geometric\, canvasses and prints of Lynn Jeffery\, St
eve Millward and Paul Hipkiss. By contrast\, Maureen Sullivan and Catherin
e Carmyllie have their her own brand of painterly\, more Impressionistic b
ut still geometric urban work while Susan Lee Brown works mainly in oils b
ut is also a printmaker which include etchings. Her work takes on a geomet
ric edge when depicting the cityscape.\n\nThe work on view includes painti
ngs on canvasses\, paper and board\, etchings\, prints. Lino cuts\, sculpt
ure and reliefs.\n\nThe exhibition will open daily from 10.00 am to 4.00 p
 m.\n\nFurther information from Mike Rickett\n\nMikerickett007@yahoo.co.uk\
