SUMMARY:The Atkinson: The Atkinson: The Liverpool School
DESCRIPTION:Atkinson hosts Liverpool School’s fourth major show\n\nThe Li
verpool School of artists is staging its fourth major exhibition at the At
kinson gallery in Southport\, six years after the art movement was created
by Liverpool Hope University graduates.\n\nThe exhibition\, which opens o
 n Saturday\, January 25 until Saturday\, March 28\, will feature 80 works
by eight artists from Liverpool\, Wirral and the Midlands\n\nThe Liverpool
School’s basic aim is to redefine urban art in geometric painting\, bot
h 2D and 3D\, using city life and buildings and transportation as its insp
iration – anything which depicts and portrays the rhythms of urban life.
As an aesthetic\, the urban landscape may be regarded as the vision a soc
iety projects about itself into the future.\n\nEach of the Liverpool Schoo
l members interprets the city landscape in their own way and in their own
distinctive styles. The movement is not a strait jacket restricting how th
e world should be viewed\, but rather it points in a new general direction
for urban art to take.\n\nThe work on show varies from the abstract\, geo
metric work of Mike Rickett\, Gabrielle Caul\, Steve Evans and David Tedha
m\, to the more conventional but still urban\, geometric\, canvasses and p
rints of Lynn Jeffery and the stylistic\, geometric paintings of scenes fr
om the Midlands by Paul Hipkiss. By contrast\, Maureen Sullivan and has he
r own brand of painterly\, more Impressionistic but still geometric urban
work\, while Susan Lee Brown will show her popular impressionistic scenes
of Liverpool in oils. Her work takes on a geometric edge when depicting th
e cityscape. The most unusual are the abstractions of Steve Evans that exp
lore and extend pictorial space through the use of light\, line and colour
 .\n\nThe work includes paintings in oils\, acrylics\, water colours\; on c
anvasses\, paper and board and Perspex. There are also etchings\, prints\,
lino cuts\, sculpture and reliefs. Altogether\, some 80 works of art will
be on show.\n\nThe exhibition will open daily from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm\,
Monday to Saturday.\n\nFurther information from Mike Rickett\n\nMikericket
