SUMMARY:The Atkinson: The Atkinson: The Landing: All That Is Left Behind by
  Sharon Barnes
DESCRIPTION:All That Is Left Behind’ is a selection of mixed media artwor
ks and digital prints produced by Southport based artist Sharon Barnes.\n\
nThe working process for the mixed media artworks incorporates arrangement
of collage\, painting\, image transfers\, photocopies and inkjet prints.
These artworks explore surface\, colour and the juxtaposition of image\,
text and found objects.  Digital prints are developed through the manipu
lation of selected images from the mixed media pieces.\n\nThe sources that
have inspired these artworks originate from observations\, captured momen
ts\, recollections of time and place\, fragments of memory and traces of w
hat is left behind.\n\nA series of artworks have been developed through th
e construction and re-construction of narratives remembered and sometimes
invented\; whispers of a forgotten history\;  a history inspired by colle
ctions of photographs of family\, friends and strangers\; a history of tim
e and place. These pieces combine surface qualities with images and object
s that evoke personal reflections\, remembrance of times past\, recollect
ions of people and places\, and often memories which were once significant
but have over time become lost or forgotten.\n\nAlongside this series\, o
ther artworks are intended as a celebration of the natural changes and inh
erent qualities of landscape.\n\n ‘I frequently walk along the Sefton c
oastline and regularly visit Cumbria.  These environments inspire and pro
vide a source of ideas. Each environment presents unique characteristics
with tides that rise and fall leaving their mark on marshes and sand hills
\, and rural landscapes that are rich in texture and colour\, or brisk and
raw in appearance. The journeys I make are recorded through photograph\,
and the selection and collection of natural detritus that reflects the qu
alities of the landscape. These fragments are kept in remembrance of time
and place. I aim to draw attention to the finer details of the landscape a
nd present them as relics that have survived the passage of time.’\n\n
Objects are layered to reflect the manner in which the landscape reveals a
nd conceals itself and are assembled to highlight the precious nature of e
ach selected subject within a composition of related fragments.\n\nSharon
