DESCRIPTION:\n\nIn celebration of Black History Month ROOT-ed zine present
  a series of workshops\, discussions and performances\n\n\n\n\nROOT-ed Zin
 e (Revolution of Our Time) is a self-published magazine and social platfo
 rm that aims to promote\, inspire and support creatives of colour who or f
 rom or currently based within the North West of England. The zine is run b
 y artists Amber Akaunu and Fauziya Johnson who met whilst in their final y
 ear of university. The two noticed a lack of representation and opportunit
 y for creatives of colour and created the platform to represent the underr
 epresented by allowing creatives of colour to showcase their talents and s
 kills.\n\nFriday 12th October 13:00-16:00 and Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 Oc
 tober 10.00-13.00\n\nFocusing on the theme of Hair\; join ROOT-ed to discu
 ss Ellen Gallagher’s DeLuxe 2004-5\, an artwork made up of sixty indi
 vidually-framed prints that feature advertisements drawn from magazines da
 ting from the 1930s to the 1970s aimed at African American consumers. Foll
 owing this\, drop in and take part in a zine making workshop\, looking at 
 the methods\, techniques and the unique topic of hair as featured in the c
 ollages that make up DeLuxe.\n\nSaturday 13th October\, 14.00-15.00\n\nRO
 OT-ed Zine and multidisciplinary artist and director Kiara Mohamed present
  their collaborative film Black Flowers 2018. The film is set in Liverpo
 ol’s Town Hall\, a space built from the success of the slave trade and a
  space for meetings between slave masters. Black Flowers explores how Bl
 ack artists can intervene\, create and decolonise historically white space
 s. Also featuring a series of photographs produced by Fauziya Johnson. Joi
 n ROOT-ed Zine\, Kiara Mohamed\, Councillor Anna Rothery\, Mayoral Lead fo
 r Equality and Race Equality Liverpool and others to discuss and dissect t
 he issues raised in the film.\n\nSunday 14th October\n\n14.00-14.30: Kiara
  Mohamed \\\\Young Goddess\n\nKiara Mohamed will recite her poem Young Go
 ddess 2018 followed by a talk on her practise and the issue of being a mo
 dern Black woman.\n\n15.00-15.30: Khadija Amaru \\\\ Brown Sugar\n\nBrown 
 Sugar 2018 is a performance piece created by Khadija Amaru. The piece use
 s movement\, film and spoken word to create a ritualistic atmosphere that 
 explores the significance of sugar in regard to the transatlantic slave tr
 ade.\n\n16.00-16.30: Kiara Mohamed \\\\ Letters to my Sister\n\nLetters to
  my Sisters 2018 is a performance piece inviting people to open handwritt
 en wax sealed letters and read them out loud or privately to themselves. T
 he letters will be words of encouragement\, love and healing\, written by 
 Kiara Mohamed\, Amber Akaunu and Fauziya Johnson\, with the aim to hope th
 at in the process of reading the letters\, it will resonate within the wom
 en. This journey of writing the letters to the readings and conversations 
 generated in Tate Exchange will be filmed.\n\nMonday 15th October\, 13.00-
 16.00\n\nROOT-ed Zine's Co-Founder\, Amber Akaunu’s work titled 39 201
 7-18 is a body of work that consists of 39 videos\, each an artistic respo
 nse to a Hip-Hop lyric. Akaunu uses this method to create artworks that ar
 e light hearted and fun yet also deal with serious and current issues such
  as racism\, toxic masculinity and Eurocentric beauty standards. Akaunu wo
 uld like to invite the public to share their favourite Hip Hop song and cr
 eate a creative response to a lyric.\n\nIssue 4 of ROOT-ed zine is availab
 le to buy in the bookshop at Tate Liverpool.\n\n
