SUMMARY:Tate Liverpool: Tate Liverpool: Constellations: Highlights from the
  Nation’s Collection of Modern Art
DESCRIPTION:Constellations: Highlights from the Nation’s Collection of Mo
 dern Art\n\nTate Liverpool\n\n3 April 2017 to 2 September 2018\n\nFREE\n\n
Supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art\n\nTate Liverpool prese
nts a free new display made up of works by towering post-war American arti
sts including Mark Rothko\, Hedda Sterne and Andy Warhol.\n\nEntitled Refi
guring American Abstraction it forms part of the gallery’s collection di
splay Constellations: Highlights from the Nation’s Collection of Modern
Art. The display presents a new account of post-war American painting\, re
vealing surprising links between seemingly dissimilar artistic approaches\
 ; abstract expressionism\, characterised by a spontaneous approach\, and m
ore traditional\, realist styles.\n\nAt the heart of the display is Bernar
d Perlin’s Orthodox Boys 1948\, one of the first American works to enter
the Tate collection. The painting combines a realist approach with abstra
ct expressionism\, expressed in the backdrop of scrawled graffiti on a wal
l in downtown New York. Figurative works by Andy Warhol and Larry Rivers s
imilarly engage with abstract and improvised styles\, while artists such a
s Milton Avery and Lee Bontecou further illustrate the diversity of Americ
an art at this time.\n\nMade up of 15 works\, many of which haven’t been
displayed in the north of England before\, highlights include\; Head of a
Girl and Children 1958–61 by Andy Warhol\, presenting visitors with a l
ess familiar work by the iconic pop artist and Untitled 1969 by Mark Rothk
o\, one of a group of paintings on paper made after a period of illness wh
en he was too weak to work on his customary large-scale canvases.\n\nConst
ellations: Highlights from the Nation’s Collection of Modern Art is a un
ique presentation of the Tate collection that has been introducing visitor
s to both familiar and unfamiliar artists since 2013. Constellations is ma
de up of 7 displays\, each focussed around a single artwork revealed to ha
ve surprising affinities with a variety of modern and contemporary artwork
 s. Continuing in the gallery are constellations featuring works by German
artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986)\; French-American sculptor Louise Bourge
ois (1911–2010)\; German-American painter George Grosz (1893-1959)\; Eng
lish artist L. S. Lowry (1887- 1976)\; American contemporary artist Glenn
Ligon (b. 1960)\; and American photographer and filmmaker Cindy Sherman (b
. 1954).\n\nRefiguring American Abstraction is curated by Dr Alex Taylor a
s part of ‘Refiguring American Art’\, a major research project support
ed by the Terra Foundation for American Art\, with Darren Pih\, Exhibition
s and Displays Curator\, Tate Liverpool.
