SUMMARY:The Atkinson: Taking Centre Stage: Female Artists in The Atkinson
 ’s Collection
DESCRIPTION:From Alice Mary Havers (1850-1890) to Dame Laura Knight (1877-1
 970) to Dame Tracey Emin (b.1963)\, this exhibition charts a trajectory fr
 om traditional modes of representation to the diverse expressions of conte
 mporary practice. It invites visitors to consider the range of creative vo
 ices by women artists represented within The Atkinson’s fine art collect
 ion\, connecting their works to the broader history of art.\n\nThe under-r
 epresentation of women artists in museum and gallery collections is a well
  acknowledged and deeply rooted issue within the sector. In response\, The
  Atkinson has committed to address these historical inequities through its
  collecting and programming strategies. As part of this ongoing institutio
 nal reflection\, the exhibition spotlights the women artists already held 
 within the collection\, celebrating their contributions while also acknowl
 edging the wider absences that continue to shape the narrative of art hist
 ory.\n\nThe Atkinson has collected contemporary art since the 1870s\, with
  each new acquisition reflecting the period in which it was created. Along
 side painting\, sculpture\, ceramics and textiles\, the collection now inc
 ludes photography\, film\, digital art and mixed-media works. The exhibiti
 on invites visitors to join the conversation on the future direction of Th
 e Atkinson’s collections.\n\nInspirations: Poetry &amp\; Creative Writin
 g Competition 2026\n\nDeadline for Entries: Sunday 18 October\n\nThe At
 kinson\, in partnership with The Arts Society Southport\, invites anyone a
 ged 18 or over with a connection to the Sefton Borough to take part in our
  fifth Poetry &amp\; Creative Writing Competition.\n\nThis year\, the comp
 etition invites you to respond creatively to artworks featured in the Tak
 ing Centre Stage Exhibition.\n\nAll competition entries will be featured o
 n The Atkinson’s website. Winners will receive prizes donated by The Art
 s Society Southport\, and their work will be displayed in the Art Gallery
