SUMMARY:Sudley House: Sudley House: Home and Away
DESCRIPTION:Home and Away\nThis exhibition features paintings of local Live
rpool views and faraway places.\n\nHome and Away is a new exhibition featu
ring paintings of both foreign and local views.\n\nThe foreign views are a
ll from the collection of George Holt\, the former resident of Sudley Ho
use. These paintings of faraway places highlight the Holt family’s inter
est in travel\, foreign countries and local customs. It is more than a de
cade since many of these works have been on display.\n\nThe exhibition als
o includes views of Liverpool and the local area in the 19th century\, wh
ile the Holts were at Sudley. These paintings largely come from the Walker
Art Gallery's collection and give a wonderful idea of what the Holts woul
d have seen as they went into the city for shopping\, business or leisure
. There are also views of the Wirral when it was still very rural.\n\nThe
display includes two works by John Atkinson Grimshaw of Liverpool's Custo
m House on the dock road in moonlight\; a building which was severely dama
ged during the Liverpool Blitz and later demolished. Paintings by Jean Leo
 n Gerome\, Thomas Creswick\, Frederick Goodall\, Charles Trevor Prescott a
nd Eduardo de Martino are also on display.\n\nLead image: Bold Street fro
