SUMMARY:John Lennon Art and Design Building: Snapshot 02: Temporary Gatheri
 ngs by Niamh Chisholm
DESCRIPTION:Snapshot 02: Temporary Gatherings by Niamh Chisholm\nReception
Corridor\, John Lennon Art and Design Building\, Liverpool School of Art a
 nd Design.\nDecember 15\, 2023 – January 26\, 2024\nMonday – Friday\,
 9:00am – 5:00pm\n--\nSnapshot presents Snapshot 02: Temporary Gatherings
by Niamh Chisholm.\nThe project explores temporary gatherings of people i
n spaces within the university\, that are specific to the BA Fine Art cour
se. These gatherings include artist talks and lectures. Chisholm records w
here everyone is sitting on A6 pieces of paper in pencil\, with a single d
ot representing each person. From this she embroiders the mapped-out drawi
ngs onto cotton squares\, each approx. 11x11 inches. These pieces explore
transient spaces\, relationships to space and memory\, and capture a brief
moment in time\, immortalising it.\nNiamh Chisholm is a Level 5 Fine Art
student. Her practice usually encompasses oil painting and textile-based w
ork\, specifically embroidery. She is continuously interested in ideas aro
und permanence\, space\, memory\, and documentation. Chisholm explores the
se concepts through creating series and archives of work that are often de
tailed and clear-cut in their visual appearance.\n--\nSnapshot is a perman
ent display programme of sequentially changing creative outputs. It provid
es an impression of each participant’s practice located in a liminal spa
ce in the School\, where visitors only spend fleeting moments travelling t
o other spaces or waiting to enter classes.\nThe project is the result of
an ongoing open call to all visiting researchers and practitioners\, staff
and students of all levels on all programmes at Liverpool School of Art a
nd Design. It presents incomplete\, transitory views of research-and-pract
ice-in-progress\; a window into a brief moment in time of a given academic
year. Utilising redundant gallery furniture stored in the public space of
the reception corridor\, the displays are selected on aesthetic criteria
of how to best animate the space they occupy\, projecting forwards in time
the potential each work holds.\nAs the year progresses a living archive w
ill develop on the concrete pillar next to each pair of vitrines\, providi
ng information about past and current displays.\n--\nDeveloped by Dr James
Schofield\, Dr Hana Leaper and Dr Christine Eyene (Exhibition Research La
b)\, and managed by students from the MA Exhibition Studies programme.\n--
