SUMMARY:The Serving Library: The Serving Library: On "Ty i Ja" [You and Me]
DESCRIPTION:On "Ty i Ja" [You and Me]\n\nDavid Crowley will introduce us to
“Ty i Ja\,” a magazine run by the communist women’s league in commu
nist Poland until around 1960\, when it was hijacked by a group of young a
 rtists\, designers\, writers\, and filmmakers. Thereafter\, it served as a
vehicle for fantasies largely prohibited in the Soviet bloc. "Ty i Ja" wa
s at first used like a seance—to make contact with the dead from the wor
ld before the “revolution." Later\, it became the home of a cargo cult:
its pages filled with sparkling “pop" advertisements for products in suc
h short supply that they needed no promotion. The evening will also includ
e screenings of films: extracts from Vera Chytilova’s “Daisies\," Wale
 rian Borowczyk’s “House\," and Roman Polanski’s “Lamp."\n\non Wedn
 esday 1 February at 6:30 pm\n\nThe Serving Library\n35 Water Street\nLiver
pool L2 0RD\, UK\n\nThe bar will be open\, serving for a modest fee. All w
 elcome.\n\nhttp://www.servinglibrary.org/events
