SUMMARY:John Lennon Art and Design Building: LJMU: RIBA North: Social Housi
 ng Symposium
DESCRIPTION:RIBA North Social Housing Symposium\n\nThursday 11 May\, 6pm
 – 8pm\n\nArt &amp\; Design Building\, Duckinfield Street\, L3 5RD\n\nFre
e but please reserve your place via https://ribanorthsocialhousing.eventbr
ite.co.uk\n\nAs part of the Look/17 Liverpool International Photography F
estival RIBA North has commissioned photographer Virgile Simon Bertrand t
o join curator Davina Lee to consider the urban geography of Hong Kong hou
sing.\n\n'About the Size of Dartford' is inspired by the Choi Hung public
housing estate\, built in 1959 to house\, according to the British colonia
 l government's yardstick\, a population of 43\,720 : "about the size of Da
rtford".\n\nThe exhibition takes the form of visual and textual fragments
which will be released via Twitter throughout the duration of festival. Tw
eets will come from @RIBANorth with the hashtag #LOOK17\n\nTo accompany th
e online exhibition there will be a social housing symposium in partnershi
p with Liverpool John Moores University which will interrogate what can be
learnt\, good and bad\, from high density social housing in Asia and how
this learning can be applied in the UK as cities expand. This reflects the
global shift to urban living from rural\, with 54% of the world's populat
ion living in urban areas in 2014. This is expected to increase to 66% by
2050.\n\nThe symposium will also look at how social housing can create a s
ense of community and establish an environment in which people choose to l
ive.\nSpeakers include Virgile Bertrand\, Dr Fei Chen (University of Liver
pool)\, Liza Parry (HPBC) and Dave Proudlove (UVNS).
