SUMMARY:RIBA North: RIBA North: Ceramica
DESCRIPTION:RIBA North: CERAMICA\n\nThis exhibition explores how traditi
onal ceramic techniques and digital engineering processes can be used toge
ther to produce meaningful and sustainable architectural elements.\n\n28 O
 ctober 2017 to 10 February 2018\nRIBA North\, 21 Mann Island\, Liverpool W
 aterfront\, L3 1BP\n0151 7030107 | ribanorth@riba.org \nFree\
n\n\n\n\nIt is widely recognised that our species is defined by the decora
tion of objects and spaces and the development of complex technologies.\n\
nOur combined dexterity\, creativity and ability to cooperate has enabled
us to manipulate our environment and connect with each other on a global s
cale.\n\nPre-industrial making techniques and the proliferation of technol
ogy are often seen as opposing forces\, one favouring the local – the de
velopment of vernacular language and context\; the other favouring global
processes – optimisation and standardisation.\n\nA selection of national
and international ceramicists were asked to further develop optimised bui
ldingscreens\, created using digital environmental and fabrication technol
ogy.\n\nThrough their input\, the resulting ceramic ceilings and walls hos
t individual vernacular languages\, support heritage and local identity\,
and transform the preliminary engineered product into a more socially\, et
hically and environmentally sustainable building component.\n\nThe exhibit
ion features full-scale prototypes of light-diffusing facades and ceilings
\, accompanied by a film explaining the experimental design methodologies
explored through the ECAlab. The exhibition will be supported by the Mould
ing Futures Symposium\, to discuss prospective scenarios for ceramics with
in architecture.\n\nECAlab (Environmental Ceramics for Architecture Labora
tory) explores the possibilities of ceramics for sustainable technologies\
, while examining the role of emerging digital technologies alongside trad
itional ceramic craftsmanship skills.\n\nIt brings together a number of ac
 ademic institutions with leading professionals\, designers\, engineers\, a
rchitects and ceramicists to realise projects with an environmentally sust
ainable focus.\n\nUltimately its aim is to develop new applications for ce
ramics within an architectural context and introduce emerging designers wi
th new ways of thinking about this material.\n\n\n\n
