SUMMARY:Warrington Pyramid & Parr Hall: Pyramid Arts: WCAF 16: Long After T
 onight: Matt Stokes
DESCRIPTION:\nLong After Tonight: Matt Stokes\n'Long After Tonight' documen
ted a specially constructed event staged in St Salvador’s Church\, Dunde
e\, Scotland\, parts of which were used during the 1970s as a venue for so
me of the city’s first Northern Soul sessions. (Northern Soul is\, simpl
y put\, African American Soul music that was transferred to the north of E
ngland during the 1960s\, thereby dislocating it from its original context
and establishing this distinct genre).\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlthough the sessions
at ‘Sally’s’\, as St Salvador’s was fondly known\, were held in a
n adjoining hall\, for the purposes of the film permission was sought to u
se the church itself. By staging the event in the unique interior of the n
ave\, the dancers were surrounded by the beautifully gilded\, ornate relig
ious imagery of the building\, thus creating a connection between the loca
tion and the activity\, as expressions of faith\, commitment and shared pu
rpose.\n\nThe people that participated in the filming came together from a
cross the UK\, many of whom attended the original nights held at St Salvad
or’s. This link to the roots of the scene in Dundee\, and the Northern S
oul fraternity as a whole\, was critical in establishing a heightened sens
e of unity and emotion\, which is evident in the final film.\n\nCommission
ed by Dundee Contemporary Arts (UK).\n\nFilm Crew and Credits\n Director o
f Photography: David Byrne\n With special thanks to: St Salvador’s Churc
 h &amp\; Graeme Adamson\, Ali Duff\, Tam McClymont\, Alan Watson\, Kodak (
UK)\, Axis Media (Glasgow\, UK)\, Film Lab North (UK) and all those who pa
 rticipated in the filming.\n\n\n\n
