 UKANI/RISE
DESCRIPTION:Preview Night: Thursday 17 September 2015\, 18.00 - 20.00\nSpee
ches at 18:15\nPerformance by Odidiva at 18:30\n\nExhibition Period: Frida
 y 18 September - Sunday 29 November 2015\n\nArtist Talk: Tuesday 15 Septem
 ber\, 18.00 - 20.00\nZanele Muholi: Visual Activism / Bethini III\n\nZanel
e Muholi is a South African photographer and visual activist whose work ex
plores gender\, race and sexuality\, particularly in relation to South Afr
ican society and political landscape. The exhibition at Open Eye Gallery i
s the first major presentation of Muholi’s work in the UK.\n\nIn 2009 Mu
holi wrote a thesis mapping the visual history of black lesbian identity a
nd politics in post Apartheid South Africa as part of her MFA in Documenta
ry Media from Ryerson University\, Toronto.\n\nSince 2004 Muholi has exhib
ited extensively worldwide\, most recently at the Brooklyn Museum (NYC). S
he has also taken part in important exhibition platforms such as the 55th
Venice Biennale and Documenta 13 in Kassel. She is the recipient of numero
us prizes and one of 2015 shortlisted photographers for the Deutsche Börs
 e Prize for her seminal series\, Faces and Phases.\n\nFour of Muholi’s p
rojects will be presented across Open Eye Gallery’s three exhibition spa
ces\, accompanied by audio/video interviews and statements from those feat
ured in Muholi’s work.\n\nFaces and Phases (2006–15) is an ongoing ser
ies of work\, a living and growing collection of portraits. Zanele Muholi
embarks on a journey of “visual activism” to ensure black queer and tr
ansgender visibility. Despite South Africa’s progressive Constitution an
d twenty years of democracy\, black lesbians and transgender men remain th
e targets of brutal hate crimes and so-called corrective rapes. More than
 200 portraits\, accompanied by moving testimonies\, present a compelling s
tatement about the lives and struggles of these individuals. They also com
prise an unprecedented and invaluable archive: marking\, mapping and prese
rving an often invisible community for posterity.\n\nZaVa (2013) focuses o
n Muholi’s relationship with her white partner\, and brings the notion o
f making the private public to the fore. The images show the two of them s
haring intimate moments in hotel rooms in various states of undress. The i
mages are soft and gentle\, and the viewer is able to get a sense of their
relationship\, their love for each other\, in a deeply connected and mean
 ingful way – not in a detached\, voyeuristic sense.\n\nBrave Beauties (2
013-2014) is a series of 12 black and white photographs celebrating lookin
g at the body – and the experience of being seen. Stylish\, coy\, subtle
and proud\, the gay and transgender men present a personal vision of them
selves to the compassionate lens of Zanele’s camera. In a state where ex
pressing the physical self that you want to be adored can lead to aggressi
on and violent persecution\, the beauties of the series are even more so f
or their bravery.\n\nFor Muholi\, Mo(u)rning (2014) evokes death but also
suggests the cycle of life as morning follows night. Life and death\, love
and hate are themes that run throughout her work. Tragic loss is addresse
d in this series\, the persecution of a community and the coming together
to remember those who have passed.\n\nThe exhibition is supported by Homot
 opia and Stevenson Cape Town.
