SUMMARY:Open Eye Gallery: Open Eye Gallery: The Image of Whiteness with Dan
 iel C. Blight
DESCRIPTION:The invention and continuance of the “white race” is not ju
st a political\, social\, and legal phenomenon — it is also visual. From
the advent of early colonial photography in the nineteenth century to con
temporary social media and photographic art\, photography has always playe
d and continues to play an integral role in the maintenance of the politic
al and social hegemony of “whiteness.” The technology of the camera is
not innocent\, nor are the images it produces or the people who make them
. This lecture engages the oppressive nature of whiteness and highlights s
ome of the crucial work contemporary photographic artists are doing to sub
vert and critique its image and continuing power.\n\nDaniel C. Blight is t
he author of The Image of Whiteness: Contemporary Photography and Racializ
ation (SPBH Editions/Art on the Underground\, 2019) and lecturer in Histor
ical and Critical Studies in Photography\, University Brighton.\n\nImage C
