 in us for an in-conversation with photographer Kirsty Mackay on her recent
  project The Magic Money Tree\, a collaborative project exploring the impa
 ct of the cost-of-living crisis and what poverty looks like across the UK.
 \n\nThe event will take place online\, via zoom\, with opportunity for the
  audience to participate and ask questions. To receive the zoom link\, ple

  the event.\n\nThe Magic Money Tree is currently exhibited in Open Eye Gal
 lery atrium space\, until Sunday 13th October.\n\nMore about The Magic Mon
 ey Tree:\n\nWorking collaboratively with groups and individuals from acros
 s England\, documentary photographer Kirsty Mackay explores the impact of 
 the cost-of-living crisis and what poverty looks like in the world’s 6th
  richest economy. Kirsty has worked closely with children\, families and y
 outh groups\, primarily in Tipton\, Bristol and the North-East of England\
 , to help develop skills in photography\, issuing them with compact film c
 ameras and encouraging them to consider the power of their own voice and h
 ow to use it. Their narrative is one told collectively through photography
 \, text and banners\, collectively questioning – to what extent is pover
 ty a political choice?\n\nKirsty Mackay is a Scottish documentary photogra
 pher\, activist and filmmaker. Mackay’s research-led documentary practic
 e highlights social issues surrounding gender\, class and discrimination. 
 She has an MA in Documentary photography from University of South Wales\, 
 Newport.\n\nHer current book and exhibition project\, The Magic Money Tree
 \, is a collaborative document of the Cost-of-Living crisis. Working along
 side and teaching photography to children and young people across the UK. 
 The Magic Money Tree attaches individual’s experiences with the structur
 al\, political\, and economic. It shows us what poverty looks like in the 
 world’s 6th richest economy.\n\nAs a working-class artist Kirsty’s own
  experiences of domestic\, sexual\, physical and socio-economic violence a
 llow her empathy\, connection and insight into the stories of the people s
 he photographs\, whilst connecting these experiences with political and ec
 onomic power structures and the British class system.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nImage:
