SUMMARY:Open Eye Gallery: Open Eye Gallery: Dissappearing Cities: Chris Les
 lie
DESCRIPTION:DISAPPEARING CITIES: CHRIS LESLIE\n11 DECEMBER 2017\n\n\nMONDAY
  11TH DECEMBER6 – 7:30PM\n\nRSVP HERE\n\nSupported by the Publics &amp\
 ; Practices research cluster\, University of Liverpool\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAll o
ver the world\, our cities are transforming. In the UK\, the optimism of m
odernist social housing blocks built in the 60s and 70s has passed\, and e
state after estate is being shut down and left to crumble or cleared for r
egeneration.\n\nChris Leslie is a BAFTA New Talent award-winning photograp
her and filmmaker. He’ll be talking about the changing skylines of our c
ities and the transformations taking place in the lives of those who inhab
it them.\n\nChris is the author of Disappearing Glasgow. Glasgow\, just l
 ike Liverpool\, is well-known  for its humour\, its shipyards\, and its b
old Victorian architecture\, built in the days when it was the ‘second c
ity of the Empire’. But it’s also renowned as the home in the UK of th
e failed experiment with modernist architecture in the 1950s and 1960s –
where those cleared from 19th-century slums of the Gorbals and Govan were
housed in vast tower block estates far from the city centre\, devoid of f
acilities and a sense of community. Initially\, a huge improvement on exis
ting living conditions\, a lack of investment and poor build quality meant
these bold visions of the future soon fell into neglect.\n\nIn Disappear
ing Glasgow\, he examines the city’s process of demolishing these conte
ntious estates. For some they are blights on the city’s international re
putation\, for some an important attempt to redefine the way we live and f
or others they were home. The result is a book that is stimulating\, haunt
ing and moving in equal measure.\n\nIn addition to Chris’s stunning imag
es\, also included are six short essays by Professor Johnny Rodger\, Malco
lm Fraser\, Kirsten Paton\, Barnabas Calder\, Rory Olcayto\, Karen Anderso
n.\n\nThe last copies of his book\, Disappearing Glasgow\, will also be
available on the night.\n\nRead a recent Chris Leslie Guardian piece here.
