SUMMARY:Open Eye Gallery: Open Eye Gallery: A Portrait Of...
DESCRIPTION:A PORTRAIT OF…\n2 AUGUST - 29 SEPTEMBER 2019\n\n\n\n\nLAUNCH
 NIGHT: 1 AUG\, 6-8PM\n\nEXHIBITION: 2 AUG – 29 SEP\n\nPortraits change t
he way we understand one another. Whether this is professional photos\, se
lfies on Instagram or snapshots of our friends\, the photos that we take o
f ourselves and each other speak volumes about who we are and who we want
to be.\n\nThrough portraits\, we come face to face with someone else: they
create a space in which we can challenge the assumptions that we often ho
ld about people. This exhibition presents projects that give us a chance t
o empathise\, to consider the experience of someone else’s life.\n\nSIXT
EEN brings together leading contemporary photographers with more than one
hundred and seventy young people from diverse communities across the count
 ry. Through video\, photography\, writing\, audio recordings\, and social
media\, the project presents first-hand accounts of how it feels to be age
d sixteen in the UK today. Featuring Lottie Davis\, Jillian Edelstein\, Ka
te Peters and Linda Brownlee\, working in collaboration with young people
across the country.\n\nIn another project\, Open Eye Gallery worked with V
ida Creative Learning\, a local group of young women who come together to
work on photography projects as a way to build resilience and increase sel
f-esteem. The group made a selection of work from the gallery’s archive\
, guided by their interest in what people wear\, how they choose to appear
in photos and and how this expresses their identity. Their selections inc
lude work from recent years and older projects\, including Teresa Eng\, Ya
n Wang Preston\, Michelle Sank\, Dave Turner and John McDonald.\n\nBefore
2012\, the last time the Olympic games took place in the UK was 1948. Kath
erine Green met with the surviving athletes\, and took portraits of them a
s they looked at photos of themselves competing 64 years before the 2012 g
ames. The Olympians seeks to allow everyone to consider the rich lives t
hat older people have lived\, encouraging reflection on the stories and ex
periences that exist in all generations.\n\nA Portrait Of… runs from 2
August to 29 September. Open Eye Gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday\,
10am-5pm\, and entrace is always free. Supported by Arts Council England\,
Liverpool City Council\, Foyle Foundation and Paul Hamlyn Foundation.\n\n
