 ibition runs Saturday 17 October to Tuesday 17 November 2015\n\nNorthgate 
 Studio in Chester will be holding its first international contemporary ope
 n art exhibition this autumn.\n\nThe studio sent a call out to artists to 
 submit their own renditions of the Old and Contemporary Masters for a show
  entitled “Taking on the Masters”. The title is ambiguous as it can be
  interpreted in two ways\; artists could play the masters at their own gam
 e with forgeries or alternatively have their own take on western civilisat
 ions revered works of art such as Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" (1517) a
 nd "The Last Supper” (1498).\n\nThe exhibition explores the question of 
 what art is through reinterpreting the works that have in some cases for c
 enturies formed our opinion on this.\n\nThese "Old Masters" of the Renaiss
 ance who studied under masters themselves as apprentices have influenced o
 ur ideals on beauty and of the aesthetic within art. The visual language o
 f today’s art practitioners is highly informed by both the old and conte
 mporary masters as is our own experience of viewing art.\n\nAsking current
  artists to use their own practice to explore this relationship was experi
 mental\, therefore\, we could not predict the outcome but we knew it could
  only be interesting.\n\nWe are excited to introduce to the world “Takin
 g on the Masters”\, which will run from the 17th October to the 17th Nov
 ember.\n\nIncludes work by the following artists:\n\nHumans of New York's 
 prominent civil rights activist of the 1960’s and muralist Janet Braun-R
 einitz/University of California Santa Cruz’s Associate Professor and vis
 ual artist Brandin Barón/Portuguese artist residing and teaching in U.S P
 aulo Machado/ Indianan artist Orie Shafer/ Lithuanian artist Lena Klyukina
