SUMMARY:News From Nowhere: News From Nowhere: John Rees: The Fiery Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Writing on the Wall are delighted to welcome back historian Jo
hn Rees to present his compelling work of narrative history\, The Fiery
Spirits: Popular Protest\, Parliament and the English Revolution.\n\nAs Wo
W proudly celebrates 25 years of radical storytelling\, John uncovers the
hidden stories of influential MPs and their allies who envisioned a ki
ngdom without a crown. The so-called ‘fiery spirits’ who brought a des
perate nation to the brink in the Civil Wars include the future regicide
Henry Marten\, the firebrand William Strode\, the formidable colonel Ale
xander Rigby and Sir Peter Wentworth\, descendant of a long line of anti
-monarchists.\n\nMore than a book of political intrigue\, The Fiery Spir
its is a testament to the power of the people. Its reflections on mass de
monstration resonate deeply today as four independent candidates sit at We
stminster as a direct result of solidarity with the Palestinian people.\n\
nJohn Rees is an influential historian\, broadcaster\, campaigner. His bo
oks include Timelines: A Political History of the Modern World\, The Lev
eller Revolution and A People’s History of London\, co-authored with his
partner Lindsey German. He also produces documentaries and presents curre
nt affairs programmes for the Islam Channel. Currently\, he is a Visiting
Research Fellow at Goldsmiths\, University of London. He is a National Off
icer of the Stop the War Coalition\, which opposes the British establishme
nt’s disastrous addiction to war\, and a founding member of the organisa
tion Counterfire.\n\nWe encourage people to use public transport to travel
to events where possible.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n*These are difficult times. We kn
ow some people may struggle to afford full price tickets. If you would lik
e to attend this event but can’t afford to\, please contact info@writing
onthewall.org.uk. All queries will be treated in confidence.   \n\nBO
