SUMMARY:Metal at Edge Hill Station: Metal: Future Station: Plough Monday
DESCRIPTION:Plough Monday dates back to the late 15th Century and is genera
lly considered to be traditional start of the agricultural year\, when peo
ple return to work to mark the beginning of the ploughing season.\n\nWhile
Metal won't literally drag a plough through the streets of Liverpool…we
are metaphorically heading back to work to develop a new green public spa
ce in Edge Hill Station\, the oldest active passenger railway station in t
he world.\n\nEdge Hill Station Garden was first re-developed in 2011\, and
we’re delighted to announce that Metal has recently secured some financ
ial support from Tesco's Bags of Help initiative to develop a yearlong pro
gramme of art\, food and gardening.\n\nCommitted to opening up the process
of creation and our public programme\, we'd like to invite local resident
s\, artists\, and organisations to a Future Station event exploring how pu
blic green spaces benefit our day-to-day lives and can drive awareness of
environmental sustainability.\n\nThe evening will be an opportunity for al
l participants to share their experiences and involvement in creating gree
n spaces\, and question the potential role of arts and culture in their de
velopment over time.\n\nThe event will consist of informal talks\, open di
scussions and will loosely be structured around the following themes and p
rovocations.\n\nBOOK HERE\n\nThe Urban Wild\n\nWhere do we find ‘wildnes
s’ in our cities? In contemporary society\, what is the public’s inter
est in wilderness? How have artists imagined wild spaces?\n\nCultivating b
ehaviours\n\nAs urban citizens how do we engage with our physical environm
ent in our daily routines? Do green spaces help people feel connected to p
ublic life? How can interactions with green public spaces inspire action
  on local environmental issues?\n\nInvited guests:\n\nMichael Smythe\n\nMi
chael Smythe is an artist and Creative Director of Nomad Projects - an art
s commissioning foundation that nurtures action-based research and collabo
rative encounters in the public realm. In 2014 Nomad Projects launched Phy
tology\, an urban physic garden established within a WW2 bomb-site in Beth
nal Green\, East London. Phytology is an artist &amp\; community-led proje
ct exploring the use\, value\, resilience\, and function of wildness withi
 n urban ecosystems.\n\nwww.phytology.org.uk\nwww.nomadprojects.org\n\n\nTh
ey Are Here\n\nThey Are Here (f.2006) is a collaborative practice steered
by Helen Walker and Harun Morrison. Their works can be read as a series of
context-specific conceptual games. They often generate temporary systems
and co-establish micro-communities that offer an alternate means of engagi
ng with a situation\, history or ideology. As artists in residence at Furt
herfield\, they initiated Seeds From Elsewhere (2016 - ongoing)\, an urban
gardening project on disused land that brings together young migrants (in
cluding asylum seekers and refugees)\, family\, friends and other professi
onals (including an architect\, photographer and carpenter). Each particip
ant is supported to grow flowers\, plants or edible produce from their res
pective homeland. Throughout the process they literally and metaphorically
ask ‘What can grow here that’s not from here?’\nwww.theyarehere.net
