SUMMARY:John Lennon Art and Design Building: LJMU: Snapshot 06: The Vulnera
bility of the Human Situation by India Clarke
DESCRIPTION:Snapshot presents Snapshot 06: The Vulnerability of the Human S
ituation by India Clarke. Contemplating the relationship between mind and
body through drawing\, observation and painting\, India’s work explores
excesses of fragility and power.\n\nInformed by her own experiences\, as w
ell as artists such as Craigie Horsfield and Marlene Dumas\, she transform
s and distorts memory\, themes of illness\, and death into speculative fic
tion. As a result\, creating an escapism by subverting expectations toward
s the absurd and surreal.\n\nThe current developments of this project (see
n as works in progress) invites an audience to rethink their concepts of c
omfort and safety. India’s series of watercolour sketches depicting a Ch
ina doll with a facial tumour explores this by playing with concepts of id
entity politics\, and reflections of the self and body. Reinforcing the in
stability of the human condition\, her sketches and research attempt to co
mmunicate the fear that comes along with the constant mutation of life and
its events.\n\nIndia is a current second-year student on the BA Fine Art
course here at LJMU.\n@artistintheforest\n\n--\n\nSnapshot is a permanent
display programme of sequentially changing creative outputs. It provides a
n impression of each participant’s practice located in a liminal space i
n the School\, where visitors only spend fleeting moments travelling to ot
her spaces or waiting to enter classes.\n\nThe project is the result of an
ongoing open call to all visiting researchers and practitioners\, staff a
nd students of all levels on all programmes at Liverpool School of Art and
  Design.\nIt presents incomplete\, transitory views of research-and-practi
ce-in-progress\; a window into a brief moment in time of a given academic
year. The displays are selected on aesthetic criteria of how to best anima
te the space they occupy\, projecting forwards in time the potential each
work holds.\n\nAs the year progresses a living archive will develop on the
concrete pillar next to each pair of vitrines\, providing information abo
ut past and current displays.\n\n--\n\nSnapshot is located in the receptio
n corridor of John Lennon Art and Design Building\, Liverpool School of Ar
 t and Design.
