BOUT THE EXHIBITION\nFilipino artist Jason Dy\, S.J. is to exhibit Sites o
f Refuge in Liverpool’s city centre. The project seeks to engage the pub
lic in the topical conversation of displacement\, refuge and sanctuary. Th
e artist aims to create sites that evoke disruption as well as meditation.
\n\nThe project is comprised of two installations\; a Tree of Refuge locat
ed in Clayton Square and a Transitional Shelter built and displayed in the
Baltic Triangle. Both pieces are interactive\; the tree – a 6ft Syrian
Cedar tree will be dedicated to those who have lost their lives whilst fle
eing conflict. The dedication will take the form of a traditional tree wra
pping ceremony conducted by a Buddhist Monk. The public will then be invit
ed to write their hopes and prayers for the victims of political\, religio
us and cultural persecutions on tags and to tie them on the twigs of the t
ree.\n\nThe Transitional Shelter will be constructed out of discarded and
salvaged materials. Once assembled it will visually reflect the shelters b
uilt by the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013. The pu
blic are invited to climb into the temporary structure and listen to the c
ontinual sound of rain whilst taking a verse from the biblical lament Psal
m 77 and write it themselves on the walls of the shed.\n\nThis will be Dy
’s final European Exhibition before he returns to the Philippines in Dec
ember and is expected to be a provocative and moving work.\n\nCOST\nBoth s
ites are free but donations can be made to the Philippine charity Task For
ce Noah for survivors of the recent typhoon Kuppo and to Liverpool’s Hop
