SUMMARY:Liverpool Central Library: Liverpool Central Library: Frankenstein
 2018
DESCRIPTION:Liverpool Book Art announce 'Frankenstein 2018' exhibition this
May\n\nThis May\, Liverpool Book Art will be curating a third major exhi
bition of Book Art in the city's Central Library. Following the great succ
ess of 2016's ‘Shakespeare Now’ exhibition\, organisers have decided
to celebrate the fact that 2018 marks 200 years since the first edition o
 f Mary Shelley’s‘Frankenstein or\, The Modern Prometheus’.\n\nFranke
nstein is a classic work for a variety of reasons. Not only is it arguabl
y the very first work of science fiction\, but it is also a core text of G
othic literature\, with Dracula not being published until nearly 80 years
later. Its themes of ambition and hubris\, ethics and morality\, responsib
ility for the consequence of one’s actions\, free will and empathy have
been important since the book was first published. Today\, they appear hug
ely relevant\, whether considering genetic manipulation and synthetic biol
ogy\, artificial intelligence and machine learning\, or Silicon Valley’s
‘disruptive technologies’.\n\nWhat is book art? We're glad you asked.
.. the book art banner houses a whole host of interesting\, intriguing and
imaginative pieces of work\, from unique hand-made books to book sculptur
es. A hybrid of art and a book – the Frankenstein monster of the art wor
ld?\n\nBook artists from around the world have responded with a hugely cre
ative range of ideas. Some have been stimulated by the themes in the book\
; others have been inspired by the way the story is told\; others have mad
e links between Frankenstein and other classic stories such as Dracula and
The Golem.\n\nLiverpool Book Art’s long-standing collaboration with Liv
erpool Central Library continues in 2018. The exhibition will open there o
n May 14th in the magnificent Hornby room\, and run until mid-August. Th
e exhibition will move to Knowsley’s Kirkby Gallery from 17th Septembe
r until 26th January 2019. New works will be created for the Kirkby Galle
ry show.\n\nPrevious Liverpool Artists’ Book Exhibitions have been a gre
at success\, attracting international submissions of the highest quality\,
with works from Japan\, Australia\, Russia\, USA\, and across Europe and
the UK.\n\nLiverpool Central Library will also be the venue for the fifth
  Liverpool Artists’ Book Fair\, taking place on Saturday 7th &amp\;
Sunday 8th July 2018. The Fair showcases unique hand-made books\, notebo
oks and cards\, bookbinding\, book sculptures and everything in between.\n
\n\n\nThe iconic Liverpool Central Library is located in the heart of the
city centre\, on William Brown Street\, between the Walker Art Gallery and
the World Museum - and just a few hundred metres from Liverpool Lime Stre
et train station.\n\nThe Exhibition and the Fair are both FREE to the publ
ic. There will also be demonstrations\, workshops\, talks and performances
during the course of the exhibition and the fair.
