SUMMARY:Lady Lever Art Gallery: Lady Lever Art Gallery: Putting on the Glit
 z
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition runs Friday 16 October 2015 to Sunday 28 February 20
16.\n\nLady Lever Art Gallery displays fabulous fashions from the 1930s\n\
nDazzling 1930s evening gowns will take centre stage in the Lady Lever Art
Gallery’s new exhibition Putting on the Glitz.\n\nThe display of 20 out
fits from National Museums Liverpool’s costume collection reveals how th
e glitz and glamour of Hollywood was reflected in the fashions of the peri
od. In contrast to the loose\, flapper-style silhouettes of the previous d
ecade\, women embraced more fitted styles with longer hemlines.\n\nAn even
ing dress that belonged to the daughter of the Chief Officer on the Titani
c will be on show\, along with a pearl and diamanté encrusted silk weddin
g dress bought from Brown’s of Chester and garments purchased from Liver
pool department stores George Henry Lee &amp\; Co. and Owen Owen Ltd.\n\nP
auline Rushton\, Curator of Costume and Textiles at National Museums Liver
pool\, said: “Putting on the Glitz showcases the sort of stylish outfits
that wouldn’t look out of place in a Hollywood film. The sumptuous text
iles\, elegant lines and subtle embellishments really bring to mind the gl
amour of silver screen sirens such as Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.\n\n
“The outfits are also representative of a period of rising social aspira
tions. Much as we do today\, people chose to demonstrate their affluence a
nd taste through their choice of clothing.”\n\nPutting on the Glitz will
also display a set of striking fashion illustrations which were designed
for George Henry Lee &amp\; Co. by local illustrator Mrs Winifred Aileen B
rown (1907-1993). Born in Wallasey\, Mrs Brown worked as a fashion illustr
ator for the Basnett Street department store\, later purchased by John Lew
is\, in the 1930s.\n\nThe illustrations have been loaned to National Museu
ms Liverpool by Mrs Brown’s daughter\, Mrs Gillian Harrand\, who learned
that her mother would sketch the fashions as they were paraded by models
in the store. The sketches would then appear in the evening newspapers\, a
dvertising the goods to readers.\n\nThe exhibition also features a wonderf
ul selection of accessories including shoes\, stoles\, handbags and hats\,
some of which were purchased by Liverpool doctor’s wife and renowned sh
opper Mrs Emily Tinne (1887-1966).\n\nVisit liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/glitz
