SUMMARY:The Royal Standard: K-Queer: Intimacies of the Invisible
DESCRIPTION:[K-QUEER] Intimacies of the Invisible | Kim HwaHyun solo exhibi
tion\n\nSouth Korean artist\, Kim HwaHyun is flying to Liverpool from Seou
l to open her solo exhibition and give an artist talk at The Royal Standar
d in Liverpool on Saturday 24th January 2026.\n\nKim HwaHyun creates a uni
verse where East and West\, past and present\, and sacred and secular conv
erge through her signature androgynous male figures.\n\nRejecting fixed bi
naries\, she embraces hybridity\, combining dongyanghwa (traditional East
Asian ink and polychrome painting) with the visual language of Japanese sh
ōjo manga from the 1950s onwards and Korean sunjeong manhwa (female-centr
ic comics/graphic novels)\, which came into their own genre by the late 19
80s onwards.\n\nUsing historically resonant materials such as agyo binders
\, hanji (traditional Korean paper)\, ink\, and mineral pigments\, Kim tra
nsforms canonical forms into vibrant scenes of charged queer male bodies.\
