SUMMARY:International Slavery Museum: International Slavery Museum: Challen
 ging histories: Collecting new artworks
DESCRIPTION:Challenging histories: Collecting new artworks\nPermanent Displ
ay\n\nContemporary artworks responding to the history of transatlantic sla
very and its legacy\n\n--\n\nThis display highlights some of the powerful
artworks recently acquired as part of a project to help develop our collec
tions.\n\nIn October 2014 the International Slavery Museum received a gene
rous grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Collecting Cultures
programme. The Transatlantic and Contemporary Slavery Collecting Project
ran for four years and resulted in more than 40 new objects and document
s being added to our collections\, including many new artistic works.\n\nW
hy art?\n\nArtistic responses to the history of transatlantic slavery\, it
s legacies and contemporary forms of slavery by artists such as Kimathi Do
nkor and Alison Welsh\, provide important new voices and new perspectives.
We hope that through the art we collect and the artists we work with\, th
e International Slavery Museum can create a richer and more challenging wa
y in which visitors and students can engage with and learn about this hist
 ory and its legacies.
