SUMMARY:Bridewell Studios and Gallery: Independents Biennial: Fleece: Flow
 - Sian Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Fleece: Flow\, Sian Hughes\nBridewell Studios &amp\; Gallery\,
 L7 8UL\nDate(s): 22/06/2023 - 28/06/2023\n11:00 am - 4:00 pm\n\nSian Hugh
 es\, Fleece: Flow\nBridewell Studios &amp\; Gallery\, 22-28 June\n\n‘Fra
gments in Time: Flow’ was inspired by my realisation that the tidal est
uary of Traeth Mawr behind Porthmadog\, was lost when the cob was built by
William Maddock in 1811 to drain the land.\n\nI used scores of tiny porce
lain boats to re-create the flow of water and currents that would have exi
sted before the cob was built.\n\nIt is gratifying to have this legacy opp
ortunity from my initial installation.  The Bridewell space enables me
to re-visit my original idea and to nuance and re-focus it to fit a new sp
ace and location.\n\nHere\, in ‘Fleece:Flow’\,  the coracle I made f
or ‘Fragments …‘ is the central focus\, with the flow of water acr
oss the Gallery space being represented by sheep fleeces rather than porce
lain boats.  In this metaphorical flow\,  black and white porcelain bowl
s\,  patterned to echo the ash lathes of a traditional coracle frame\, be
come smaller vessels\,  caught in the current.\n\nThe fleeces were left b
ehind from an installation at the Bridewell last year where Irene Rogan bu
rned sheep fleeces to highlight what farmers are now forced to do\, due to
the loss of a profitable wool market in the UK and the subsequent lack
of value and sales.\n\nI have rescued four of these fleeces to use in my i
nstallation.\n\nBoth Fragments in Time: Flow and Fleece: Flow\, reflect
loss. The first being the loss of the tidal estuary.\n\nFleece: Flow ref
lects on the loss of old ways …from the traditional use of coracles to c
ross rivers and bodies of water\, to their use in guiding sheep across riv
ers to wash the fleeces prior to shearing –  and the disappearing tradi
tional skills and materials in the art of coracle making itself.\n\nThese
installations have been made possible by grants from the Arts Council of W
ales in 2019 and 2022\n\nAbout the artists: Sian Hughes
