SUMMARY:Gostins Building: Gostins Building: Paul Mellor\, not dark yet...
DESCRIPTION:Paul Mellor\n'not dark yet...’\n\npaintings - 2010-2017\n\nPa
ul Mellor studied fine art (painting) at Wimbledon School of Art and has c
ontinued to make and exhibit work nationally and internationally in the me
dia of film\, video\, printmaking and photography.\n\nHe returned to paint
ing in 2010. This recent work\, informed by his lifelong passion for histo
rical and contemporary painting\, considers themes of isolation\, melancho
 ly\, history\, memory\, loss\, allegory and mortality.\n\nThe work display
s an almost naive faith in the continuing relevance of painting in a digit
al age and deliberately references\, both obliquely and directly\, particu
lar artists (sometimes individual paintings) that have been an influence s
ince he was a student and others picked up along the way. These include Pi
 ero della Francesca\, Titian\, Velazquez\, Friedrich\, Gauguin\, Manet\, M
unch\, Hopper\, Bacon\, and Richter\, as well as auteur filmmakers such as
  Herzog\, Pasolini\, Wenders\, Visconti\, Antonioni and Tarkovsky.\n\nA re
curring concern of the work is to open a dialogue that seeks to interpret
a psychological space that is more representative of a state of mind than
any specific place\, frequently employing the same themes\, tropes and mot
ifs – the melancholic rhetoric of distant horizons\, windows and mirrors
\, isolated figures viewed from behind\, and empty spaces and desolate lan
dscapes that suggest an estranged reality and vulnerability.\n\nIn employi
ng these recurring themes\, he hopes to effect a distancing from the subje
ct being represented so that the image is viewed atmospherically rather th
an descriptively.\n\nFrequently using source material from a range of digi
tal reproductions (art books\, film stills\, postcards etc)\, the finished
works offer representations governed by contingency and removed from thei
r points of origin that seek to question the idea of memory\, (both privat
 e and collective\, its failure\, illusion and ambiguity)\, history\, and t
 he human condition.
