SUMMARY:FACT: FACT: Queer East presents: Bye Bye Love (50th Anniversary) [1
 8]
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nQueer East presents: Bye Bye Love (50th Anniversary) [18]
 \n\n\nRuntime: 85 mins\n\n\n\n\nUntil the 2018 discovery of a film negativ
e in a warehouse\, Bye Bye Love was long considered lost. A new print gi
ves audiences a rare chance to revisit this radical work from 1974. Follow
ing two young people\, Utamaro and Giko\, on a doomed summer road trip thr
ough Japan\, Isao Fujisawa’s poetic\, surreal work reflects on the dissi
pating promise of 1960s counterculture and free love.\n\nThe film is styli
stically influenced by the French New Wave and American New Cinema\, notab
ly Jean-Luc Godard and Arthur Penn. Yet the main character’s name – Ut
amaro – also suggests a rethinking of Japanese artistic traditions\, esp
ecially male perspectives on feminine beauty. Here\, romantic love transce
nds gender\, sexuality\, and even the body\; a queer challenge to conventi
onal understandings of relationships that adds to the political charge of
this rediscovered classic.\n\nThe film opens with a recorded introduction
from director Isao Fujisawa.\n\nDoors: 18:30. Screening: 19:00. Langauge:
Japanese with English subtitles.\n\nThis screening operates on a pay-what-
you-can basis starting from £5.\n\nPlease note that doors open 30 minutes
before the screening and the programme will begin promptly at the listed
 time.\n\nBookings Essential - £5-10\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWed\, 13 Nov: 19:00\
