SUMMARY:FACT: FACT: BlackFest Festival 2021- Independent Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:BlackFest 2021Film presents: Screenings of 'Same But Different'
by Anniwaa Buachie and 'In Search of a White Identity by Cliffordkuju Hen
 ry\n\nBOOK HERE (£11.37)\n\nIn Search of a White Identity\n\nBy Cliffordk
uju Henry\n\nDirected by Victoria Evaristo\n\nIn Search of a White Identit
y interrogates race\, class and masculinity. Patrick and Mickey grew up to
gether\, but now find themselves on opposing sides. Detained in the same p
olice cell having been arrested at the same protest\, two men are forced t
o face the complexity of their upbringing.\n\nThis powerful new production
addresses urgent and timely issues as Patrick and Mickey try to learn to
understand each other. Directed by Victoria Evaristo (WMV\, WOW Festival S
outhbank\; Extract\, Soho Theatre)\, In Search of a White Identity introdu
ces writer-performer Cliffordkuju Henry (Top Boy\; Dizzee Rascal’s Money
Right) as Patrick and Drew Edwards (The Trial of Christine Keeler\; Suffr
agette) as Mickey.\n\nOriginally part of The Actors Centre's Working Class
Season curated by Actor Awareness in 2019\, the piece has been re-envisio
ned in the light of 2020\, and casts a prophetic eye over the urgent matte
 rs of today.\n\nDirector Victoria Evaristo\n\nCinematographer Dann Emmons\
 n\nEditor Nicholas Paton\n\nWriter Cliffordkuju Henry\n\nProducer Toad in
the Hole Theatre company in association with The Actors Centre\n\nPatrick
Cliffordkuju Henry\n\nMickey Drew Edwards\n\n- -\n\nEquality is for everyo
ne. However\, black and brown voices will say experiences of class and rac
e are different\, and acknowledge they intersect very intimately.\n\nThe s
creening will be followed by debate\, discussion and dialogue\, and - part
icularly in Liverpool - this could not be a more needed\, timely and impor
tant conversation to have\, where there is a melting pot of economic disad
vantage and deprivation.\n\nEarlier in the year the government announced i
ts white working class under achievement report\, leading to what MPS clai
med will be ‘a proper targeted approach to reverse the outcomes of a lon
g forgotten disadvantaged group’.\n\nHalima Begum\, Director of the Race
Equality thinktank\, The Runnymede Trust\, wrote a full article on how wh
ite working class were being pitted against ethnic minority groups.\n\n“
Keep telling the white working class that they’re the victims of inequal
ity\, but fail to rectify the underlying structural problems\, and frustra
tion will legitimately spread. It’s time for this government to move bey
ond the rhetoric of levelling up\, to invest in education\, towns and new
industries across the entire UK. Only then can the multi-ethnic working cl
ass even begin to believe Liz Truss’s claim that “equality is for ever
 yone” wrote in The Guardian.\n\n________________________________________

 t Different\n\nDURATION: 13 Mins\n\nGENRE: Documentary\n\nTHEMES: Gender\,
  Colourism\, Identity\, Misogyny\, Racism\, Beauty\, Colonialism\n\nSUMMAR
Y: There are many nuances to the black identity but only a few come to lig
ht. This has been shaped by the entertainment industry\, the media. Hollyw
ood has filtered our perception of what a black woman looks like\, what sh
e thinks\, and feels. For some women\, this has opened the gateway into a
community that may have been distant and unattainable\, but for others\, t
his has muted their stories and created a new narrative that is rendering
their perspectives\, to the point of extinction. This film documents a con
versation between a mixed-race woman and an African-Black woman\, explorin
g and highlighting their similarities and differences. Ultimately there ca
nnot be a change for or within the black community until we acknowledge AL
L of those who feel invisible and marginalised\, only then can change happ
 en inside and out.\n\nTRAILER: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_PlWCWUwQO
