SUMMARY:FACT: FACT: Ashley Holmes: Decaying Tail of a Sound
DESCRIPTION:\nJerwood Arts / FACT Fellow\, Ashley Holmes presents a special
performance as an outcome of his residency at FACT.\nBOOKING ESSENTIAL
 — FREE\n\n\n\nWed\, 15 Feb\n\n\n\n 19:00\n\n\n\n\nDecaying Tail of a So
und is a live event by artist\, Ashley Holmes as an outcome of his Jerwo
od Arts / FACT Fellowship. Centred on musical\, theoretical and geographic
al explorations\, Ashley will premiere a live version of a new sound compo
sition developed from field recordings\, conversations and materials gathe
red during his time spent in Liverpool.\n\nThe event title makes reference
to a section of ‘Echo'\, a chapter by Julian Henriques and Hillegonda
Rietveld from The Routledge Companion to Sound Studies - a volume presenti
ng a comparative and historically informed understanding of the workings o
f sound in culture.\n\nAshley's interests focus on the sonic processes\, i
terations and influences of Dub\, the sub-genre of reggae music\, to exami
ne Black music as a methodology to understand and re-define links between
past and present within broader social contexts.\n\nAs part of his ongoing
research he has broadcast radio shows and DJ mixes\, produced audio compo
sitions and worked with drawing and writing processes. Decaying Tail of a
Sound continues this work and delves into the possibilities of sound\, l
istening and movement as embodied practices.\n\nThe live event and researc
h presented within his upcoming installation\, bring together various visu
al and written materials that speak to the ways in which Black experimenta
l sound facilitates encounters with geographical histories and Afro-diaspo
ric philosophies that exist outside of prevailing\, normative knowledge sy
stems.\n\nFor this event\, Ashley has invited artists Ratiba Ayadi and Sei
gfried Komidashi to share space and present live works that respond to the
mes of his research into echo\, reverberation and notions of temporality a
nd conceptions of place.\n\n\n\n\n\nARTIST BIOGRAPHIES\n\n\n\n\nAshley Hol
mes\n\nAshley Holmes is an artist and DJ from Luton\, currently based in
Sheffield. His research is informed by an interest in the value and potent
ial of music as a framework that allows us to think relationally within br
oader social\, cultural\, and political discourses and reimagine notions o
 f listening\, storytelling\, collaboration\, ownership\, and belonging. As
hley currently hosts Tough Matter\, a monthly broadcast on NTS Radio\, a
nd is a resident on Sheffield based online station Mondo Radio. He also f
acilitates Open Deck - a series of gatherings giving space to collectiv
ely listen and hold discursive space around relationships to music\, sound
\, memory and oral histories. He is a lecturer in Fine Art at Liverpool J
 ohn Moores University.\n\nRatiba Ayadi\n\nRatiba Ayadi is a composer\, pr
oducer\, sound and performance artist. She layer’s fragmented vocalisati
ons over sonic landscapes and explores the possibility of curating invisib
le structures. She performs and records as an alias\, Silent Songstress -
an entity that can move through and between studies of self\, through voca
l and physical inquiry. She/they investigate the act of presence in absenc
e and absence in presence. Birthed in the speculation of identity in the d
iaspora - sonically they exist together as a duplicity of being - a bridge
between worlds. In collaborative works they tap into frequencies of alter
nate lifelines mirroring the suffocation of separation - because of oppres
sion - and channel emotive melodies with otherworldly lyrics.\n\nSeigfried
  Komidashi\n\nSeigfried Komidashi is an artist\, musician\, poet (a.k.a s
eigfried komidashi\, sockless adventurer) from the Yoruba tribe\, working
with various mediums to engage in afrofuturist discourse on time\, space a
nd nostalgia in a neocolonial witt traditions of mystics and nomads past.\
