SUMMARY:John Lennon Art and Design Building: Exhibition Research Lab: Exhib
 itions of/and/as Speculative Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Exhibitions of/and/as Speculative Fiction\n\nJuly 9\, 2024\n2:0
 0 – 4:00pm\n\nArchibald Bathgate Seminar Room\,\nGround floor\, John Len
non Art &amp\; Design Building\n\n—\n\nWhat’s the relationship – rea
l and possible – between exhibitions and speculative fiction?\n\n—\n\n
Responding to an emerging seam of curatorial projects exploring speculativ
e subject matter – from artist installations inventing alternative histo
ries to group exhibitions set in the future – this event asks what’s a
t stake in using exhibitions as a format to conjure counterfactual realiti
es\, prototype transformed conditions\, and prefigure possible futures.\n\
nConvened by independent curator and Lecturer in Exhibition Studies Madel
eine Kennedy\, the event will draw on her collaborative and experimental c
uratorial research project Imagining Exhibitions Otherwise alongside a c
onstellation of projects by artists\, curators and writers who are fusing
speculative fiction and exhibition-making in diverse ways.\n\nTouching on
mirrored research questions of if and how exhibitions could be devised as
immersive speculative fictions in themselves\, and how speculative fiction
might inform curatorial theory and practice\, the event will culminate in
an invitation to the audience to project themselves into these speculativ
e worlds and imagine their wide-ranging multidisciplinary implications.\n\
n—\n\nOur events are always free and open to all\; there is no need to
book for this afternoon of speculative fictions.
