SUMMARY:Open Eye Gallery: Elodie Horsewell: Let Me In // Let Me Out
DESCRIPTION:An Independents Biennial Exhibition\n\nLet Me In // Let Me Out\
nElodie Horsewell\n\n***This poster exhibition will be mounted in multiple
Independents Biennial venues from June to September. Please check this pa
ge for a list of venues which will be updated shortly.***\n\nLet Me In //
Let Me Out is an interventional\, text-based adventure game that resp
onds to political\, media and social discourses around transgender rights
\, particularly around our access to single-gender public spaces such as b
athrooms. The first iteration of the game was staged in a women’s toile
t in the LJMU’s art school building and was adapted to work perfectly
for this space.\n\nThe work places viewers in the shoes of a trans pers
on who is accessing a public toilet. As viewers move through the narrati
ve of the game\, they must make a series of choices about how they navigat
e the hostile bathroom environment. The game’s installation means that w
hen viewers make decisions which move them through the game’s fictiona
l bathroom\, they must also move through the physical bathroom where the g
ame is installed\, in order to continue playing.\n\nFor many people\, to
ilets in public spaces and within institutions can be a small and in
significant figment of people’s days. However\, for trans people\, publi
c toilets are spaces of great anxiety\, where we often face adversity and
discrimination. Let Me In // Let Me Out attempts to provide viewers with
a new\, more thought-provoking perspective on spaces they might largel
y take for granted. The game’s interactivity allows viewers to see bat
hrooms through the eyes of trans people.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAbout Open Eye Gall
ery:\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nWe’re actively rethinking what a gallery can be. We p
 roduce exhibitions\, long-term collaborative projects\, publications\, fes
tivals\, and university courses — locally and worldwide. We welcome over
85\,000 visitors to our gallery every year\, over 200\,000 to projects in
other venues\, and many more to our online spaces. We proactively take ri
sks to spark crucial conversations and enable creative expression.
