SUMMARY:The Lake Gallery: Elemental
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nElemental\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFive artists working in collaborat
 ion with nature and the landscape\nJulie Leach\nMarianthi Lainas\nJanene W
 audby\nAlice Fox\nAnn Goddard\n\nThursday 18th September – Saturday 18th
  October\nThursday – Saturday 10am – 4pm\nJulie Leach is an artist pri
ntmaker who works with the elements\, primarily the wind\, to document the
invisible forces of nature. Her interests lie in exploring phenomena of t
ransience\, ephemerality and intangibility. By facilitating “nature as a
rtist” she creates drawings\, screen prints and etchings that express ex
traordinary lightness\, energy and movement.\n\n\n\nEach piece is created
collaboratively with the tidal elements. Out at the strandline\, an imprin
t of the sea is embedded into light-sensitive papers that have been expose
d to waves\, sand and sediment – the result of a unique set of condition
s at one particular moment in time. For this collection\, Marianthi has fu
rther developed the process by working with nocturnal as well as daytime t
ides.\n\n\nJanene makes ceramics with organic forms and surfaces\, as if
her pieces are found objects or have occurred in nature. Work is low fired
and glaze is rarely used\, leaving the tactile clay surfaces to speak.
Janene uses a wide variety of techniques in her work\, specially adapted
for each series of her work\, whether that be tidal shallows\, rust\, lich
en or the earth itself.\n\n\nAlice Fox is an artist based in West Yorkshir
 e. Using her textiles-based skill set and techniques from soft basketry\,
she works with plant fibres and found objects. Alice makes unique sculptur
al and wall-based works\, bringing different materials together to form ta
ctile surfaces and structures.\n\n\nAnn’s mixed media constructions and
assemblages have evolved from a life-long interest in the landscape\, natu
re\, and concern for the environment. Inspiration comes from researching l
ocal and global ecological issues. Current pieces explore the destruction
of habitats and loss of biodiversity caused by the impact of wild fires an
d the deforestation method of slash and burn.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
