SUMMARY:Editions Ltd: Editions: Viewing - New Mythologies - Michael Lacey
DESCRIPTION:Private view - Thursday 22 October 2015\, 17.00 - 20.00.\nNew M
ythologies - Michael Lacey\n\nExhibition runs until Saturday 14 November
2015\n\nMichael Lacey was the very popular winner of this year's Editions
Liverpool Open and we are delighted to be presenting a solo exhibition of
his work as part of his prize.\n\nMichael plays with a very recognisable s
et of imagery that produces works that are sombre\, thoughtful\, serious a
nd sometimes laugh out loud hilarious. His work manages both the surreal a
nd the ridiculous in a way that is thought provoking and a little disturbi
ng.\nUsing painting and collage he describes a world that is in his own wo
 rds a "a loosely autobiographical\, self-mythologising fiction"\n\n"Mixed
media pieces combine painting with intricate layered collage\, depicting s
trange phenomena\, outlandish landscapes and their lonely inhabitants. Pla
yful sculptures incorporating toys and household items repulse and amuse\,
delicate drawings depict figures engaged in strange rituals of penitence.
\n\nNature teems with ambiguous intent and wildly improbable architectura
l structures sprout like weeds\, forming tricks and traps. Rigorous constr
uction masks the boundaries between collage and painting\, between fiction
and fact\; morbid and comic scenes resist simple interpretation. "\nMicha
