SUMMARY:dot-art Gallery: dot-art: Four-Dimensional Colour Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Four-Dimensional Colour Exhibition\n10th – 24th September\, d
 ot-art Gallery\n\nOn Saturday 10th September\, dot-art will launch a speci
al two week exhibition by Ali Barker as part of the Liverpool Biennial Fri
nge. The solo show\, entitled Four-Dimensional Colour\, consists of a seri
es of paintings inspired by the artist’s synaesthesia\, a condition wher
e senses are triggered by one another and allow the artist to hear colours
. This unique perspective will be demonstrated through the daily painting
of two ongoing works over the course of the exhibition.\n\nThis exhibition
will showcase new paintings made between January and August 2016\, compri
sing a set of “instinctive synaesthetic responses” to music and anothe
r set representing sounds translated into colours.\n\nSince the start of 2
016\, artist and musician Ali has recorded a distinctive sound each day. W
hether this is a musical note\, a door-bell\, a car horn in the distance o
r the rumbling of a coffee machine\, each sound has then been translated i
nto a small block of colour and added to her ever-growing portfolio of art
work.\n\nFor each month of 2016 she is composing one painting to represent
the music and sounds she experiences\, as a grid of coloured squares base
d on the layout of a calendar. Finally\, she will also make a similar\, bu
t larger painting comprising all 366 notes and sounds recorded in 2016. Th
is\, and the painting of “September 2016”\, will be works in progress
at the time of the exhibition.\n\nArtist Ali Barker says: “Music is a ma
jor influence on my work. I create visual representations of music and sou
nd in colour\, inspired by my sound-colour synaesthesia. Many of my painti
ngs are based on geometric forms\, ranging from transcribed music to patte
rns derived from recorded sounds. Other paintings are instinctive synaesth
etic responses made by directly applying the colours to the paper or canva
s while listening to the music\, or a combination of these styles. The cho
ice of music can be my own\, or chosen by a client for a commission.”\n\
nIn 2011 Ali won Merseytravel’s Art on the Network competition “Design
a New Skyline”\, for the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel. Her “Liverpoo
l Composition” and “Wirral Composition” designs were made into mural
s on the new cladding\, approximately 5m high and 22m wide\, and are publi
c artworks on permanent display at each end of the tunnel.\n\nFrom 12-6pm
on the opening day (Saturday 10th September)\, the artist will be in the g
allery working on the paintings and talking about her artistic process wit
 h visitors.\n\nThe dot-art Gallery\, 14 Queen Avenue\, Castle Street\, Liv
 erpool\, L2 4TX.\nMonday – Saturday\, 10am-6pm\n\n
