SUMMARY:Bluecoat: DaDaFest: Flying While Fat Animation by Stacy Bias
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on cramped conditions on flights\, this animation by S
tacy Bias challenges the dehumanisation of fat people.\n\nIn collaboration
with Dr Bethan Evans\, the University of Liverpool and DaDaFest.\n\nFlyin
g is uncomfortable for many people\, but when the physical infrastructure
of the plane doesn’t accommodate your body and/or the social attitudes o
f other passengers make the plane environment a hostile space\, flying can
be a particularly anxious thing to do.\n\nNews stories about fat passenge
rs often present them as unreasonably taking up space that is not their ow
n\, as a problem for others\, dehumanising fat people akin to ‘excess ba
ggage’.\n\nTo challenge this\, this animation presents the voices of fat
passengers as they explain the challenges of fitting into spaces that exc
lude them both socially and materially. The animation encourages people to
empathise with fat people as fellow passengers and human beings\, and to
think about the political and economic relations that contribute to this e
xclusion.\n\nFind the animation at the Bluecoat\, unity theatre and Tate L
iverpool.\n\nThe animation will will also feature at a discussion event on
Fat Activism at the unity theatre\, find out more here: www.dadafest.co.
