SUMMARY:Creative Edge: Creative Edge: Votes for Women? Don’t Make Me Laug
 h
DESCRIPTION:Votes for Women? Don’t Make Me Laugh\n\n2nd Jun 2018 - 6:00pm
  - 6:30pm - Book here\n\nThe campaign for women’s votes evoked many reac
tions and those both for and against the idea saw cartoon imagery as a goo
d way of getting their point across.\n\nIn terms of the suffrage campaign\
, whilst female lobbyists were often drawn as unfeminine\, in the 20th ce
ntury cartoons also mocked politicians’ inaction and law officials’ ov
erreaction to suffragette protests. By the early 20th century\, with wome
n ensuring the survival of the British economy during WW1\, Punchincluded
cartoons that noted the irony of denying the vote to women for so long\,
and even acknowledged the magazine had been wrong to oppose the vote.\n\nT
oday politicians still admit that their image can be ruined\, or boosted\,
by the skill of the cartoonist.\n\nThis exhibition will enable visitors t
o view a selection of the cartoons\, to hear from experts and to discuss h
ow well the messages were conveyed.
