SUMMARY:Cunard Building: Creative Conversations\, Compassionate Responses
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nSuicide awareness training for artists and cultural worke
rs - hosted by by Heart of Glass\, Angela Samata and Zero Suicide Alliance
.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuicide Awareness Training for Artists and Cultural Workers
\n\nArtists and cultural workers often find themselves holding space for d
ifficult conversations.\n\nWhether through participatory projects\, exhibi
 tions\, performances\, workshops or long-term community relationships\, cr
eative practitioners regularly encounter experiences of grief\, trauma\, d
istress and\, at times\, conversations about suicide.\n\nYet many people w
orking in the cultural sector have had little opportunity to access suicid
e awareness training designed with their work in mind.\n\nThis special eve
nt brings together suicide awareness training from the Zero Suicide Allian
ce with a facilitated conversation exploring what compassionate\, ethical
and practical support could look like for artists and cultural workers.\n\
nThe event forms part of Close to Home\, Heart of Glass's public programme
exploring suicide\, bereavement\, care and community through eight years
of collaborative artistic practice.\n\nPart One: Suicide Awareness Trainin
 g\n\nDate: 9th September - 10am - 11.30am\n\nDelivered by the Zero Suicide
Alliance\, this practical and interactive session will help participants
feel more confident recognising when someone may be struggling and respond
 ing safely and compassionately.\n\nTogether we'll explore:\n\nUnderstandin
g suicide awareness and prevention\n\nChallenging stigma and common miscon
 ceptions\n\nStarting compassionate conversations\n\nListening without judg
ement\n\nResponding to disclosures safely\n\nUnderstanding support pathway
s and signposting\n\nThis training is not about becoming a mental health p
rofessional. It is about building confidence to respond appropriately when
difficult conversations arise.\n\nPart Two: Listening &amp\; Co-Design Co
 nversation\n\nDate: 7th October 10am-11.30am\n\nFollowing the training\, p
articipants will be invited to take part in a facilitated listening and co
-design session within Close to Home at Liverpool's Cunard Building.\n\nTo
gether we will explore:\n\nWhat conversations are artists and cultural wor
kers already having around suicide\, grief and mental health?\n\nWhat supp
ort feels most needed?\n\nWhat challenges are unique to creative and parti
cipatory practice?\n\nWhat might sector-specific suicide awareness trainin
g look like?\n\nWhat resources\, guidance and approaches would help practi
tioners feel more confident and supported?\n\nRather than beginning with a
ssumptions\, we want to begin by listening.\n\nThe conversation will help
shape thinking about future training and resources designed specifically f
or the arts and cultural sector.\n\nWho is this for?\n\nThis event is for
 artists\, cultural workers\, producers\, programmers\, community practitio
ners\, creative freelancers\, arts educators and cultural leaders - partic
ularly those working in community-facing roles.\n\nAbout the wider program
me\n\nThis event forms part of Close to Home\, a six week installation. Pr
esented by Heart of Glass\, in partnership with Culture Liverpool and Publ
ic Health Liverpool.\n\nBringing together eight years of work by artist Ma
rk Storor made in collaboration with communities and individuals with live
d and living experience of suicide across England\, Ireland and Wales\, in
 cluding films\, photographs\, sculptures\, poetry and music.\n\nWe invite
you into an evolving space of contemplation\, reflection and quiet assembl
 y. A beautiful artistic space for what is often difficult to express\, ack
nowledging and honouring the experiences of those we have lost.\n\nFind ou
t more here: heartofglass.org.uk/ClosetoHome\n\nThe installation opens ahe
ad of on World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 and closes on World Mental Heal
th Day and seeks to contribute to a wider public discourse about suicide\,
stigma\, care and community.\n\nAlongside the installation\, we are creat
ing opportunities for artists and cultural practitioners to consider their
own role within this conversation.\n\nWhy this matters\n\nResearch consis
tently shows that stigma and fear can prevent people from talking about su
icide and accessing support.\n\nWe know that compassionate conversations c
an save lives.\n\nWe also know that cultural spaces are often places where
people feel able to share experiences that may not emerge elsewhere.\n\nA
t a time when arts organisations are increasingly engaging with questions
of wellbeing\, mental health\, inequality\, trauma\, grief and lived exper
ience\, there is a growing need to ensure practitioners are supported to n
avigate these conversations safely and ethically.\n\nThis event is an oppo
rtunity to learn from one another\, identify shared challenges and collect
ively shape what future support for the sector could look like.\n\nMore in
formation about Zero Suicide Alliance\n\nParticipants will undertake Zero
Suicide Alliance suicide awareness training\, gaining practical skills and
confidence in recognising when someone may be struggling and understandin
g how to respond appropriately.\n\nThe training is based on a simple\, but
powerful principle:\n\nConversations can save lives.\n\nFind out more abo

tted to making our events and training as accessible and inclusive as poss
ible. Please let us know your access requirements in advance so we can sup
port you.\n\nThe Cunard Building is fully wheelchair accessible. Step-free

ilets are available within the building.\n\nAssistance dogs are welcome.\n
