SUMMARY:Cass Art: Cass Art: The Liverpool School
DESCRIPTION:The Liverpool School at Cass Art\n\nThe Liverpool School art mo
vement is staging a show at Cass Art on School Lane\, Liverpool\, next doo
r to Bluecoat arts centre.\n\nThe art movement\, which aims to depict the
urban scene in a new vibrant way\, will have on display a taste of their w
ork in both prints\, painting and sculpture.\n\nThe movement was created a
bout four years ago and staged its first official exhibition at Liverpool
’s Anglican cathedral in 2014. The movement now has eight active members
\, three of them in Birmingham and one in Dublin.\n\nThis is the first new
art movement to be created for at least 40 years and the third art organi
sation to be created in Liverpool\, the previous ones being the Sandon Soc
iety\, formed in 1905 and based at the Bluecoat and a much earlier Liverpo
ol school of painters called The Liverpool Academy\, first formed in 1769
but which had disappeared by the end of the 19th century.\n\nLike the Sand
on Society the Liverpool School was formed by four graduates – three fro
m Liverpool Hope University and one from Liverpool John Moores University.
The original Sandon Society graduates were from the University of Liverpo
ol’s School of Architecture and Applied Art\, known as the “art sheds
” under the tutelage of Augustus John.\n\nThe Liverpool School’s basic
aim is to redefine urban art in geometric painting\, both 2D and 3D\, usi
ng city life and buildings and transportation as its inspiration – anyth
ing which depicts and portrays the rhythms of urban life. As an aesthetic\
, the urban landscape may be regarded as the vision a society projects abo
ut itself into the future.\n\nEach of the Liverpool School members interpr
et the city landscape in their own way and in their own distinctive styles
. The movement is not a straightjacket restricting how the world should be
viewed but rather it points in a new general direction for urban art to t
 ake.
