Free and welcome to all 🖼️“Ni de aquí, ni de allá” is a common phrase in the Latino community which roughly translates to “not from here, not from there” – particularly to describe the lived experience of belonging to two or more cultures, ethnicities or languages, often due to (forced) migration and assimilation.
The concept is about holding space for different parts of one’s identity, the past and present, indigenous and Eurocentric knowledge, and the traditions we grow up with, as well as the adopted customs of our new homes. By acknowledging our own liminality, we can build bridges between seemingly disconnected aspects of who we are and self-actualize our “wholeness”.
In this exhibition, Liverpool-based artists Talia Belen Laing and Stephanie Trujillo explore their dual heritage and pay homage to Peru from a unique multi-cultural lens. Through applying Andean traditions of textile, weaving, craft and other mediums, the artists question their own sense of identity, home and belonging and embrace their shared state of “in-between-ness’”
