SUMMARY:Bluecoat: Bluecoat: Sumuyya Khader: Always Black Never Blue
DESCRIPTION:Sumuyya Khader’s solo exhibition at Bluecoat reflects on cont
emporary life in Liverpool and explores people and place through illustrat
 ion\, drawing\, print and painting.\n\nThe exhibition marks Khader’s fir
st UK solo show in a public gallery and brings together work produced acro
ss her career to date. This includes a recent return to painting\, the med
ium that first drew her to art\, an artistic development that has been sup
ported by a residency here at Bluecoat in the months leading up to Khader
’s exhibition.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKhader’s paintings and illustrations captu
re fleeting moments and snapshots of daily life\, originally captured by t
he artist photographing the world around her. Khader transforms these snap
shots into her compositions\, often by flattening images and mixing in abs
tract shapes\, colours and rhythms.\n\nHer work often features restorative
green spaces\, relaxed interiors and still life\, including details such
as house plants layered with patterns and markings. The spaces she depicts
celebrate the life-giving properties of plants and greenery\, and through
their precisely detailed compositions\, also advocate for a great sense o
f care for our surroundings and our neighbours.\n\nKhader’s portraits fo
cus on Black subjects and talk to Black lived experience and identity. Her
celebration of people and places is often combined with powerful text\, s
uch as ‘STAND UP\, SPEAK OUT THIS IS A FIGHT FOR US ALL’\, ‘WE FIGHT
’\, and ‘SAY IT LOUD\, I’M BLACK AND I’M PROUD’ reflecting the u
rgency of the fight against racism and the erasure of Black voices\, parti
 cularly in Liverpool.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore info: https://www.thebluecoat.
