SUMMARY:Bluecoat: Bluecoat: Sean Edwards - Undo Things Done
DESCRIPTION:SEAN EDWARDS\nUndo Things Done\n\nSat 5 December 2020 - Sun 21
 February 2021\nBluecoat\, Liverpool\nBluecoat is delighted to bring 2020 T
urner Bursary artist Sean Edwards’ Wales in Venice solo show Undo Thin
gs Done to Liverpool. The artist’s internationally acclaimed presentati
on for Wales at the 2019 Venice Biennale was a poetic inquiry into place\,
politics and class\, intertwined with personal histories. As the show tou
rs and evolves\, Sean Edwards (b. Cardiff 1980) has extended the exhibitio
n to present new works at Bluecoat. Cardiff based artist\, writer and ind
ependent curator Sadia Pineda Hameed (b. London 1995) was invited by Edw
ards to make a solo show alongside Undo Things Done. Pineda Hameed shares
his interest in what we expect and what we inherit. Her solo show is a n
ew film entitled The Song of My Life made this year.\nKnown for his scul
ptural approach to the everyday\, Edwards often begins with seemingly unre
lated elements linked by autobiographical and cultural connections. These
range from the 1970s shopping centre near the housing estate where he grew
  up\, to Springsteen’s album Nebraska\, a Welsh quilting group\, snooker
\, tabloid newspapers\, and various found materials. Through investigative
processes including time spent in local archives\, museums and libraries\
, he gathers together images\, stories\, quotes\, and clips. It is in the
teasing out of these things in the studio\, in isolating\, abstracting\, a
nd bringing them together\, that their political and formal resonance come
s into play.\nUndo Things Done takes as its starting point Edwards' exper
ience of growing up on a council estate in Cardiff in the 1980s\, capturin
g and translating what he calls a condition of 'not expecting much' into a
shared visual language\; one that evokes a way of living familiar to a gr
eat number of people.\nAt Bluecoat Edwards will create an expanded version
of Undo Things Done spanning two of the largest gallery spaces. The exh
ibition will feature key artworks exhibited in Venice including the ‘Con
fessional Screen’ sculptures and his own version of Welsh wholecloth qui
lts\, alongside new prints\, a new work for the exterior of the building a
nd a re-edited version of his radio play Refrain.\n\nRefrain\, co-produce
d by National Theatre Wales\, was written for the artist’s mother Lily E
dwards and streamed live from her flat in Cardiff to the venue in Venice e
veryday of the Biennale. Refrain weaves Lily Edwards’ biography\, grow
ing up in a Northern Irish Catholic Children’s Home and her subsequent l
ife in Wales\, with found materials and Sean Edwards’ memories from chil
dhood. The work was subsequently broadcast in a new version by BBC Radio 4
December 2019. A new edit will be presented at Bluecoat in the gallery t
hat suits the duration of a day set by gallery opening hours.\nThe artist
will also show a significant older work\, the silent film Maelfa (2011).
Set in the now demolished 1970s shopping centre on the Llanedeyrn estate
where he grew up\, this film is a precursor to his presentation in Venice:
Undo Things Done reunited with its origins.\nUndo Things Done is open
 Wed - Sun\, 11am - 4pm. Free entry\, booking is recommended with some tick
ets available on the door.\n\n\n\nAbout the artist\nIn 2019 Edwards repres
ented Wales at the 58th Venice Biennale and was awarded the Turner Prize
Bursary in 2020. He has been selected for the British Art Show 9 and has
exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. Forthcoming solo exh
ibitions include\; Temple Bar Gallery\, Dublin (2021)\, Bluecoat Gallery
 \, Liverpool (2020) and past exhibitions at Ty Pawb\, Wrexham\, 2020\, Net

 13)\, Kunstverein Freiburg (2012) and Spike Island\, Bristol (2011). E
dwards graduated with an MA  from the Slade School of Art in 2005\, and i
