SUMMARY:Bluecoat: Bluecoat: New Art Bluecoat
DESCRIPTION:Launching Fri 12 Apr and will continue until Sun 23 Jun\n\nThro
ughout 2019\, the Vide space is hosting exhibitions about Bluecoat’s lon
g history as an arts centre\, the first in the UK. Formalised in 1927 with
the establishment of Bluecoat Society of Arts\, this followed two decades
of activities organised by a group of artists\, the Sandon Studios Societ
y\, who had moved into the building in 1907.\n\nThis display accompanies
Survey\, our gallery exhibition by early-career artists\, and it similarly
focuses on new art produced or presented at Bluecoat. The exhibitions\, p
erformances\, commissions and residencies represented here reflect the sup
port and promotion of new and emerging art by the arts centre over several
decades.\n\nThis includes open submission exhibitions and Survey's of ne
w work\, particularly by local artists\; first shows by students and recen
t graduates\; early career opportunities for artists who went on to wider
success\; exhibitions reflecting new tendencies in art from abroad\;and ea
rly presentations by well-known artists like Yoko Ono and US musician Capt
ainBeefheart\, whose first exhibition of paintings was at Bluecoat.\n\nOn
display are posters of exhibitions and events\, photographs of gallery ins
tallations and performances\, and printed material relating to Bluecoat pr
ogrammes including exhibition brochures and invitation cards.\nThe exhibit
ion continues upstairs with a video documenting a selection of events from
the1960s to 2008 and posters from exhibitions by women artists who have s
hown at Bluecoat.A heritage display along the ground floor corridor by the
Vide also features past arts programmes. Bluecoat’s arts history is rev
ealed on its archive website mybluecoat.org.uk
